''So thats the difference between Saints fans and other teams fans. We are prepared to say when we were wrong and not defend an opinion that we can see is not right.''

I've got no problems with you at all mate but what a ridiculous thing to say. Saints fans are no more special in this aspect than any other fans except maybe utd <laugh>

If you were just talking about being wrong in that it didn't all fall apart when Lovren left, that's something else altogether. And btw I'm pleased you're exceeded expectation. There was a thread on your board at the end of last season ranking the players and guess what, Lovren was ranked not only above Fonte by most who voted, but in top 3. That was based on how he performed for a whole season, so you can't now say in retrospect that he wasn't better than Fonte and most of the team when your fans voted that he was. That's re-writing history.

Lovren was better/brilliant in the first half of the season, Fonte was slightly better in the second half of the season. Lallana was brilliant last season, but Tadic seems just as good, if not better.

And yet this is how you ranked the team at the end of the season -

    Boruc - 10
    Clyne - 5
    Fonte - 8
    Lovren - 2
    Shaw - 4
    Schneiderlin - 6
    Wanyama - 11
    Lallana -1
    Davis - 9
    Rodriguez - 3
    Lambert - 7

    hmmmm <confused>

There was a big Lovren love in last season :) He had a great start with us but if you frequent our board so much you will have noticed how many of us were saying 'Fonte has arguably performed better than Lovren as the season has progressed'. I for one was saying this from January onward and I was one that wrote Fonte off when we were in the Championship :)

Yes many voted for Lovren. I didn't and many others didn't.

I'm not arguing about who is the better defender of the 2. There's not that much between them. Lovren might even be a bit better. What I am saying is that Lovren is not the leader that Brendan was saying he needed and saying he'd bought.

<laugh> I found 2 threads on the Southampton board [on my one and only visit] that contradicted what saints fans were saying on here about Lovren not being as good as Fonte.

I actually think we may have bought the wrong one <laugh> but that's not the point. Your fans are now trying to say he wasn't better than Fonte when clearly they thought he was before he was sold to us as the ranking posted above shows. Gary Neville and others were banging on about Lovren being the leader - I don't use the term leader with him because I never took much notice before he signed for us and not seen him enough since he came to form an opinion.

Respect to Koeman for what he's doing and so nice to see your team in the top 4 <ok>

If Fonte was equal to Lovren & such a top player, why was it only championship side Cardiff City trying to sign him in the summer?

1 more than the number of big clubs in for Fonte, that's all you need to know mate <ok>

got you tobes, my bad, didn't see the original point <ok>

teams only go for players they need, just a shame we had arsenal to contend with for Sanchez, or he could have been doing for us what he is currently doing for them. getting them vital points.

I don't know how good Fonte is tbh but the end of season votes on the saints board had Lovren between 1-3 and Fonte 7-10. Thus the claim they are re-writing history. The fact they say Fonte has stepped up and/or they're not missing Lovren is a valid point but that's another debate <ok>

I think age may well be a factor there. Apart from the obvious blindness to actually seeing what is happening on the pitch and how the name of a player can make him more valuable if he is fashionable big teams don't buy 30 year old defenders.

He was the closest thing to Suarez that was available and imo you should have bust a gut to try and land him, as he'd have been the perfect fit for your side.

There were only about 10 people actually put rankings there, hardly representative. There were loasd of posters saying Fonte was having the better season after Lovren's good start. Anyways Mine is below again. Now I'm off to cheer on Man Utd so they take some points of our rivals.

    Boruc - 11
    Clyne - 9
    Fonte - 3
    Lovren - 4
    Shaw - 8
    Schneiderlin - 5
    Wanyama - 10
    Lallana -1
    Davis - 7
    Rodriguez - 2
    Lambert - 6

Shaw has been rated too high for me by many. full backs have replaced the wingers in the modern game and..........1 assist?

But if clubs did discriminate against age and the name of a player, why did we end up signing Lambert?

That is a silly question. Big difference in paying £20m for a 1st choice CB and £4m for a backup striker.
