I was referring to the striker department. We won't sign Berainho (sp) as we already have Origi. Sturridge will continue to be our main guy and if we sign anyone else it will be a recognised forward, not a young potential.

Are you really that doubful about us splashing a huge load of cash on a young player with potential?
I though last season that Berahino would become a decent player, but not an exceptional player and not good enough for Liverpool (or at least what Liverpool aspire to be). Still, he's scoring consistently this season, which is a good sign.

This is an interesting point. What do we aspire to be (other than champs in all competitions taken part in)?? Is Rodger's trying to get us playing a la last season, which is essentially aspiring to be a team very over-reliant on one amazing stand-out player. And what were we the season before?? I don't know what his game-plan is anymore for the team and I don't think it's ever really been clear. He came to the club banging on and on about his philosophy and ways of doing things, but the evidence so far this season, tactically and from team choice, is that he's very blinkered and as has often been pointed out effectuates a peculiar sort of favouritism. Last season looks more like serendipity than anything else now. I'm not jumping on the Rodgers out train and because of last year the club is ahead of schedule in what the owners want to achieve but I don't think we're as far away from that first season under Rodgers as we all started to think, certainly we're at a bit of a standstill.

Well, my comment was more in hope than expectation tbh. I never want to see us sign a player after one good season. I also think we need someone to hit the ground running and its perhaps a bit too much pressure to put on a youngsters, especially if a large fee as been paid too.
I think we're making slightly different points (but that's not to say yours isn't a good one). My point was that Liverpool aspire to be a team challenging for the championship, certainly top 4 regulars, with decent finishes in the Champions League. So like Chelsea, basically, in terms of quality, or Man Utd of old (or Liverpool of even older). (Obviously we want to win everything, but you can't win everything every season, although you can give it a go). Last season, we seemed to be heading towards that faster than we hoped. Now we seem to have dropped back a bit again. It's quite clear that where we aspire to be is not where we are today. Berahino looks to be a decent player, and I certainly think he'll be good enough to play for a Europa League- standard team (i.e. teams that finish around 5th-8th in the league). Some would argue that's where we are now; it's certainly where we were when Brendan took over. Will he be good enough to be playing a team that wants to win championships? Can you imagine hime playing in a Champions League final (or even quarter-final)? That's obviously a personal opinion; right now, I'm not sure. But that's the sort of player we should be aiming for (if possible; I know there are potential issues about players wanting to join us).
Your point seems to be partly about that, but also about style and the direction Rodgers is taking the team. I can quite easily see Berahino fitting a Rodgers team in terms of style; I'm just not sure on the quality. Are we much further on than two years ago? Last season it was mostly about SaSaS. So far this season, only one of them has really played, and one fo them isn't coming back. The people covering (essentially Balotelli, to an extent also Markovic, Lambert and Borini, although their opportunities have been limited) have not been adequate replacements. The defence and midfield seem much the same so far. I think we'll have a better view at Christmas, when the new players have had more time and hopefully Sturridge is back. If we're playing the same then, then yes, I think we're not much further on from two years ago than we thought.
I agree, but it wouldn't surprise me if we make an approach. If nothing else, we could do with his goals right now.

Agree with this sentiment, especially about Berahino. As a rival fan (not wumming), it's always been comforting to see Liverpool packing their team with players just below the standard expected to be challenging consistently for Top 4 or even the title. For me a club like Liverpool is doing less than half the job. They have good home-grown talent that emerges on a regular basis. You also buy the ocassional bit of quality e.g. Torres, Alonso, Suarez. But you also need to regularly buy a number of "ready-made" first team players, not necessarily world-class like the 3 I've just mentioned above, but those capable of holding their own against the best teams in the league. NOT do what you've been doing for the last 20+ years - a girth of squad players and expect them to play like said "ready-made" first teamers. A typical example I can point to is your complete disregard for buying a decent winger for as long as I can remember (instead opting for those very squad players like Pennant or Riera) or not bringing in a quality CB in more than 5 years to replace stalwarts like Hypia and Carragher. And I don't believe Liverpool can't attract top players, ofcourse they can, I think it's just pure bad judgement or planning on the club/manager's part.
We need a striker who is right at his peak, right now. Balotelli should be... if this is it then that's brilliant isn't it. Sick of this buying for the future bollocks, it has its place but it's all we've been doing for two seasons. Starting to look like these signings of 'potential' are just a prelude to future excuse making about low risk gambles.
