You can disagree, but the evidence is that most deals happen at the end of the window. As for saying Wenger's stance is bizarre, that is a bit of a non point. He has to work with the window as it's set out regardless of when it ends. If it ended on the last day before the season started, I'd expect him to approach it in the same way still and you would see lots of deals being done on the last day or two still.
One thing I would say in response to that is that, according to most reports, Ozil for example wasn't available any earlier in the transfer window, so we had the option of waiting until the very end (when the selling club had managed to get a replacement, and the club they bought off had bought a replacement ect) or buy someone else/no one at all. It's not always as easy as the Cech signing, as sometimes players aren't available before the start of the season, or the selling club want to keep hold of them until transfer deadline day to jack up the price in a bidding war...
@PISKIE - I've already explained why a lot of deals happen on the last day. But there are more deals that happen throughout the Summer that go under the radar or the media don't make a huge fuss about. Surely it makes more sense to bring in a player earlier and get him to familiarise with his team mates, get used to training regime, manager and build a relationship with them all rather than purchase a player on September 1st when the season has started and there is pressure to perform straight from the off so there's no period for them to settle in. It just makes more logical sense to me. @Smirnoffpriest - Ozil wasn't available any earlier because RM were waiting for the Bale deal to materialise. In any case, we still had plenty of time in that window to bring in a striker and a DM which we failed to do. Flamini was a cheap option, but we had plenty of time to buy another DM. And we nearly got Higuain before he went to Napoli. Look, we may well be in negotiations with other players' representatives - who knows - but other clubs don't seem to have this arduous process that we always seem to go through when signing a player, so I don't understand why it always takes so long for us.
In an ideal world Brunel yes. But as already mentioned, transfers depend on a number of factors. It's not like popping down the shops to buy a pint of milk. The timing of the transfer isn't just down to the buying club.
It's the same with many other transfers, clubs won't let players go until a replacement is bought, or the player is waiting to see if there are any other offers before committing ect, there's a huge number of variables. I'm sure everyone would love to get the signings done as early as Cech's but it's nowhere near a simple process and many factors are out of the clubs hands.
Piskie I agree with you. But what I'm saying is other clubs don't always seem to have the complications that we seem to have in regards to transfers, so I still don't get why it happens to us frequently. We actually did our business very early last Summer with Chambers, Sanchez, Ospina et al which was very surprising but encouraging at the same time. So it just makes me wonder what actually happens in these negotiations. That being said, there's not been much evidence (by anyone credible) to show we're in the market for another player hence why I'm a bit disappointed as it stands.
We'll see how it goes fella. I'd love for us to have all of our transfer business wrapped up already, but for the reasons already outlined it may not happen until the end of the window. I've no doubt though that Arsenal do have targets that they are working on. We just don't come out like the other clubs and say we are definitely in for X player.
Barnsley vs Everton is surprisingly entertaining, good game Everton have been a bit **** though lol 2-1 Barnsley at the moment after a great finish from miralles similar to girouds the other week, claws one back for Everton.
Everton make it 2-2 with the half time additions of delafeu (sp?) and Barkley having an impact. And then it's 3-2 Barnsley straight away! Great game
Then Everton denied a clear cut penalty... Everton fans will probably feel like the ref hasn't been too kind to them.
3-5 Everton win. But even then both teams could of and probably should of scored a few more! 53 shots in total...
Im happy we won but 2 own goals in our last 2 games are the only reason we have won. We need to get a grip and fast because city are running away with this already.
