That's better, 1-0 Mancs, Van Persie with a header

Sorry, didn't realise we're competing with the Mancs for the title!

The run to 4th really open if the united game stays this way

Been a great signing for them. Regardless of his age.

And its not like he's reliant on his physical attributes, so he might go on playing at such a high level for another 4-5 years, which is a sobering thought for whoever will be challenging them for the title in that time.

Well what do you suggest we aim for? There's no reward for finishing 6/7/8th <doh>

I'd rather Spurs lost than Man Utd. The odds might be against us getting 4th because of the 6pt gap and our poor start but at least it might help us come the end of the season and it gives us something to aim for. A Man Utd loss wouldn't help us one bit and it might make the rest of our league season a little aimless.

Indeed. As unpalatable as it is, we are playing for different goals than United. Getting fourth would be a step towards being able to actually compete with them again.

See the United fans singing about their own team again...oh wait, silly me they were singing about us! That's a shock!

    draw for me best result.

utd drop 2pts on title challenge(they will prob win any ways) but never know, and Spurs only gain 1pt on us.

    could live with that lol,

Regardless of who is involved we still have to aim high, we're Liverpool FC for god sake. There's no point just settling for 6/7/8

All 3 dropped points last week & we wasted it not by not competing with United on the day. Arsenal have dropped yet more points, Spurs look like doing it again. We'll see about Everton tomorrow night.

I think it was Tobes and or Mito who scoffed at our chances a couple of weeks ago & looking at the table then I couldn't blame them. I also thought it unlikely all 3 would drop enough points for us to get back in the race.

Well, at least 2 of the three have dropped points and we play all 3 so......united aren't our concern this year.

  16. Of course we have to aim high but its not going to happen. This has happened several times already this season, we win a couple and tails go up but then we go and lose one or two and are out of it again. We are just on the peak of that motion at the minute and have to visit Arsenal and Man City in our next two league games!

Realistically, we need to be gaining an average of over two points per game, otherwise known as championship form. Forgive for being pessimistic but I think that is beyond us <ok>

Agreed. We still have to play Spurs & Everton at home. And Everton/Spurs don't have great records at Anfield.

Arsenal at the Emirates will obviously be tough and we hardly ever beat Arsenal but they are a much worse side than they've been in recent years and you'd hope Sturridge/Suarez/Gerrard could trouble their frail defence.

  18. If we manage to win one of the next two games (or anyone from the top half for that matter) then I may start to be a bit more optimistic <ok>

True G, but as fans we've got to just keep hoping. I'm firmly in the camp that 4th is too much for us this year but you don't just accept that as fact. Other teams can & do go into ruts. They've all to play United & City at some point too and its just as likely they'll come away with nothing to show for it either. (Like today!)

All we can do is keep beating the teams below us & beat the teams immediately (at the moment) above us.

If we can't beat Arsenal, Everton & Spurs well then we don't deserve & won't get 4th. If we can.....then lets see how they do with us right in the mix.

Looking at the bigger picture: wanting a spurs win just for city to close the gap on united almost guarantees we don't make 4th. Each year we're not in top level Europe is another year away from being league competitive, which gives united yet another year free hand to add to the title total tally.

I don't think we'll get it, and never said in my posts that we'll get it. But my argument was that fourth is what we need to be aiming for, at least until we achieve it. We won't achieve it this season, but that's no reason to say we shouldn't have it as an aim.

I'm not getting my tail up at all, I just don't see any point in aiming for anything less than fourth as there is no reward for finishing in 6/7/8th.

I fully understand that we won't make fourth until we strengthen our squad with EXPERIENCE, all these young talents coming through is great but we aren't getting 4th until we get some EXPERIENCED talent in the team.

Could Sneijder be that? Maybe, but he'll need a lot of help.
