On the subject of cricket, I remember watching a TV series on the 1932-3 "Bodyline" Ashes tour. I would like to watch it again but all I can find on ebay are Region 4 dvds whereas I know we are Region 2. I have a cheapie Polaroid dvd player. Would I be able to play these discs on my machine if I bought them?
I only just caught the end of John Arlott's career, so Benaud's was the voice of cricket for me as a young lad. No more to say really. Great feller. RIP.
"Never insult the viewers by telling them what they have seen perfectly clearly themselves. Only add to it if you had something pertinent to say.’ If only some other commentators, especially football ones, would follow that bit of advice from Benaud.
Check into this before you buy the R4 disks, but there is freeware software out there which can bi-pass all the region problems (a pseudo encryption) and let you copy & burn a DVD that you should be able to play on most DVD players, and particularly on a Windows-based PC. Just do a google search & you should find quite a lot of freeware. "Slysoft AnyDVD" may be just what you're looking for...you'll need to combine with "Clone DVD" to pull it off. However it's also got a free version to download (Google that too)....it's mentioned in the attached http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html Good luck PS. My son uses it/them all the time...never had a problem PPS. Just looked at the link...seems you can get a free trial for a number of days, but even if you need to buy a "souped-up" version, it shouldn't be too costly. I've never bought it if I recall - but we've been using it for years. Their business model has obviously changed over the years. There will be other products for free out there, but this one is excellent.
I remember him more as a player in the 1950s than as a commentator, when John Arlott was the voice of the sport, as cricket largely disappeared from my life when I emigrated to Canada in the early 60s, but he was an unforgettable personality and news of his death has brought back many memories of my cricketing youth and the great Aussie teams of the Don Bradman, Ray Lindwall, Keith Miller era. RIP Richie!
I wonder how Richie would have described underwater cricket (coming to "The Deep" shortly): "Marvelous, out for a Duck fishing for a ball off the leg stump" please log in to view this image
