RIP GINGER- I was never alive to see Red Rum win the GN live but have watched them many a times. Will go down one of the greatest horses trained by one of the greatest trainers and got the pleasure to meet him he is funniest men I have met ever lived!
A really nice man. I was lucky enough to meet Ginger McCain in the mid-80's. I was at Kempton with my dad, who worked in racing. He seemed to know McCain quite well, possibly partly due to them sharing the same nickname (Ginger). Dad fancied one of Ginger's and we popped along to where he was getting the horse ready. He happily chatted to us as he worked on the horse in the box and told us it would win - which it did.
I'm 21. I watched my first Grand National when I was 11 in 2002 the year Binderee won it. Then I had always known of the legend that is Red Rum but not so much about the man behind Rummy's success. I got to know a whole lot more about him when he won the national again with Amberleigh House 2 years later. It was a story even I thought was beautiful despite never witnessing Red Rum's race victories. I'm no expert on horse racing but I do have an interest in it and the National remains one of my favourite sporting/tv events of the year. A great deal of my interest stems from my admiration for that man and his whole family. I certainly appreciated him even more when his son went on and won this year earning me a nice £75 after placing a £5 bet on Ballabriggs this year! Ginger McCain was and is a truly great man who epitomised the spirit and legend of the Grand National. The name is in safe hands with Donald as shown this year. May Ginger rest in peace and may his spirit live on.
RIP Ginger. A true great of NH racing. Never as there been a man so passionate about one race like Ginger was about the National and a fitting end that he lived to see his son win the prestigious race. His handling of Rummy throughout his years of racing and to get him there inch perfect every year is a credit to the genius of Ginger, We will probably never see the likes of Rummy again that horse was a one off and so was his trainer...
