Geoff Wragg with Teenoso after the colt's 1983 Derby win

Racing has lost one of its legendary figures with the death of Derby-winning trainer Geoff Wragg in Newmarket on Friday. He was 87.

Wragg won the 1983 Derby with Teenoso in his first season after taking over the licence at Abington Place from his father Harry, whom he had assisted for the previous 28 years.

Two years before his retirement in 2008 Wragg was a short-head away from winning a second Derby with 66-1 chance Dragon Dancer.

In between there were many Group 1 winners, including two King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Teenoso and Pentire –who both ran in the famous Mollers Racing colours – as well as big-race successes around the world.

Wragg sold the main house and stables at Abington Place in 2011 but converted the stable hostel into a retirement home.

He leaves his wife of 61 years Patricia, and his funeral will be strictly private, family only.

Newmarket trainer Chris Wall paid tribute, saying: "Geoff was a very professional trainer with a quiet demeanour and he trained a lot of good horses.

"He was very kind to us when he retired as he passed on some of the Mollers horses for us to train. I remember at the Newmarket trainers' meetings that he was a man of few words but when he did speak you'd better listen, as he spoke a lot of sense."

Piggott has Teenoso in third about 10 seconds into the film. As the commentator says Piggotts has Teenoso in a prominent position, he's about 6th in what looks like brown with light sleeves and cap. The commentator then makes a few mistakes on where Teenoso is in running. As they race face on toward Tatts corner, you can see him between the front two, in the second line of three. He had the race won a long way out. That's him just behind the leader in the pic.

Sad news indeed, always a trainer a liked to follow in my callow youth, I remember Young Buster being a fairly smart one he trained. RIP and condolences to his loved ones.
