I really am shocked, I watched him on football focus yesterday talking about how hard his group was in the world cup qualifiers and to think this has happened is tragic.

Just got in and saw that Gary Speed had died. Unbelievably sad and shocking news. Apparently Shay Given had tears streaming down his face at the start of the Villa match which is just gut-wrenching.

Tragic news.

OH NO - People making jokes on twitter about this!!

"Please will everyone UNFOLLOW @sickipediabot and just show the idiots behind it that there ARE some limits & decency!"

Wouldn't it be great to have a memorial game for charity, with the likes of Given and Nobby playing.

This is truly awful news.

I'm not often shocked to my core but this has shaken me very badly.

Gary Speed was only 3 years older than me and I followed his career with interest ever since he signed for Newcastle United.
He was a truly fantastic player and as a team, we struggled to fill the void he left.

I feel sick at this news as I was enjoying watching him blossom into a fabulous football manager. Wales were showing real signs of progression and to read he's taken his own life makes absolutely no sense to me.

Police are saying there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death so conspiracy theories be damned.

Seems Gary managed to hide his personal problems too well from everyone.

Tragic news. I associate him more with Newcastle than any of his other teams. He was truly a Geordie legend. If you have to hold up a player as an example of how to conduct himself as a professional footballer and a man then Gary Speed was it. A true pro and gentleman. My thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.

RIP Gary Speed. <rose>

I can't imagine what the Gary on the left must be thinking.

He was someone that i admired when he was playing for us, he is a Newcastle Legend in my eyes, a true professional on and off the pitch, he would give his all every game no matter what club he played for, he was a talisman, someone you could always depend upon.

For him to take his own life so suddenly leaves me shocked and very sad.

Thankyou for your time with us Gary <applause>

Couldn't agree more. Felt numb when I heard the news. It's amazing how the death of someone you don't know can affect you.

I didn't agree with the minute's clapping at Swansea. Silence would've been more appropriate considering it happened less than six hours before kick-off and the way it happened.

I'm not ashamed to say I shed a tear. A true great.

RIP <rose>

If there was one player I was proud to say played for our club, it was Gary Speed. Football is about more than how good a footballer you are, it's about your morales, imo, and he appeared to be one of the nicest, grounded footballers around.
