St Leger hero Encke suffers fatal injury
BY LEWIS PORTEOUS 11:02AM 14 OCT 2014
ENCKE, who ended Camelot's Triple Crown dream when winning the 2012 Ladbrokes St Leger, suffered a fatal injury during routine exercise on Tuesday morning.
Owing to complications, Godolphin's five-year-old had to be put down after sustaining a hind limb injury during work.
Trainer Charlie Appleby said: "His Highness Sheikh Mohammed is deeply saddened at the loss of his Classic winner."
Quoted on Godolphin.com, he added: "Encke was a talented racehorse and will be sorely missed as he was one of the yard's favourites."
On the track, Encke won three of his nine starts, with his crowning moment coming at Doncaster in September 2012 when he defeated dual Derby winner Camelot to land the St Leger.
However, it is for reasons off the track that Encke will perhaps be best remembered. He became the most high-profile horse involved in the anabolic steroid scandal involving his disgraced former trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, which engulfed Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation last year.
Although returning a positive sample, Encke's drug test after landing the Doncaster Classic was negative and he is still officially recognised as the St Leger winner.
While Al Zarooni was banned for eight years, Encke was suspended for six months for his positive test.
He returned to action this year, competing three times and finishing third to Brown Panther in the Irish St Leger last month.
