On reflection, perhaps solo is the best way to go, as Goethe tells us, "It is only in loneliness, that your perceptions put forth their flowers".

A leading international boxing commemorator has described Michael Conlan’s loss at the hands of judges as “disgraceful” but said the Irish team overall had “underperformed”. Steve Bunce also said that it would be “too easy” to say that the departure of coach Billy Walsh had been a factor in the losses.

Despite appearing to win the fight, Irish boxer Conlan lost by unanimous decision to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin in the quarter-finals of the men’s bantamweight division. Veteran British sport pundit Bunce told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that if there had still been an appeals process as in previous Olympics, he is “absolutely convinced” Conlan would have won on appeal.

“(With) the Conlan decision, ‘disgraceful’ is not strong enough a word, he walked the first round, let’s get that right.

He won the first clearly, and that was the problem, the judges went for Nikitin in all three score cards, that put Mike under pressure, he had to fight a different fight, he had to fight Nikitin’s fight.”

Backhanders for the judges. Reminds me of the Korean Olympics.

Trev, I'm just about to start an argument with some Irish people about the boxer getting beaten. I heard he definitely won the 1st round but the others were tight? Can you give me your professional opinion on how the fight went please? Surely it isn't the craziest decision that the boxing world has ever seen like the Fenians want the world to believe

H8 to break it to you Iain, the boxing at the Lympics has a history of perverse results. It's no coincidence that the 2 recent controversial decisions went in favour of Russian boxers.

In a highly controversial 3–2 judge's decision, South Korean boxer Park Si-Hun defeated American Roy Jones, Jr., despite Jones pummeling Park for three rounds, landing 86 punches to Park's 32. Allegedly, Park himself apologized to Jones afterward. One judge shortly thereafter admitted the decision was a mistake, and all three judges voting against Jones were eventually suspended. The official IOC investigation concluding in 1997 found that three of the judges had been wined and dined by South Korean officials. This led to calls for Jones to be awarded a gold medal, but the IOC still officially stands by the decision, despite the allegations. Jones was awarded the Val Barker trophy, as the best stylistic boxer of the 1988 games, which was only the third and to this day the last time in the competition's history when the award did not go to one of the gold medal winners. A similarly controversial decision went against U.S. team member Michael Carbajal. These incidents led Olympic organizers to establish a new scoring system for boxing.
