Have you noticed it! Whenever in recent seasons Spurs have had a stand out players, you know, Van der Vaart, Modric, and now Bale and Dembele we are inundated with fans from Chelsea, Arsenal, and Man U., telling us how they will be going somewhere else.

They just can't get it into their heads that Spurs should have such players, it must be wrong! We are not entitled to include world beaters in our team, that is not our place, at least not in their scheme of things.

We can't be a big club because we have not been ordained by Sky into the order of the '4'. We should just accept our role of support act to these fabulous clubs and stop behaving above our station. Just play our nice football and stop this misplaced ambition.

Levy should send a letter to the FA straight away to apologise for his bad manners and promise not to sign players beyond our level ever again.
 
its a form of envy that they struggle to come to terms with. they try to hide it but it spills out in the form of a load of bollocks..not their fault. Them 3 clubs have had plenty success but they still cant handle the fact that Spurs are definately not the Spurs they all got used to in the 90's and early 2000..you should throw in Liverpool into that equation too.

they all think they have a right to everything that is good in football and all the other teams have no right to improve. then again if it was a team like Norwich,Southampton etc..they would praise the club for unearthing a gem...but when Spurs unearth a good player...it hurts them and the bullshit starts...makes one giggle at their obvious pain,hurt and green eyed envy.
 
If you look through our history, 60's (and before) right through to present day, we have always had special players, players that could play for any team.....but what happens? they always leave in the end seeking clubs that can help them furfill their ambitions.

So rival fans won't take us more serious until we change our approach to trying to have success with the big boys, we should we building a squad to challenge for the title and buy a bale or modric at his peak, until we're in that position we're always going to be viewed as that club just below the man utds and as such fans of these clubs dont believe we can hold onto players like Bale.
 
It happens with every good player at a club that isn't considered one of the biggest by the media. It didn't take long for them to start writing articles about Michu leaving either yet at the sametime they're quick to praise one club players and criticise players who chase money, which makes themselves look hypocritical. It's mildly annoying but if it's the cost of having good players than so be it, I think we've got lucky with the Sandro rumours dying down very quickly, I expect them to be back in full swing by the summer.

Agreed, except in the sixties we were taking the top players from the likes of Chelsea. That's also when we picked up glory hunting fans like me. <laugh>
 
The problem is that when we do have special players we always sell them, so until we change that and are able to keep one we will always be an easy target for the media.

We are closer to that breakthrough than we have been for years and at least we sell on our terms.

Completely agree with this, and I think that Levy would do everything possible to avoid selling to another PL club.

However, you can never say never because of the skewed "market" which isn't a market at all because we cannot possibly compete with teams that don't have to abide by any sort of recognised business model (and sadly I doubt they will when these financial fair play rules take effect). If a team offers £100m for Bale what do you say?
 
My favourite part of it is when we're told that so-and-so is overrated and that he's going to join Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc. in the next transfer window. :confused:

True but the problem is we still know we are going to lose the player.

The only consolation is that we seem to not sell to rivals now.

If Bale goes then I hope it's Barcelona or Real Madrid rather than Chelsea, Utd or City.
 
There will always be 'the haters' and 'the doubters' and 'the easily lead' (the gullible).

What Spurs need to do, is to start winning things again. That would shut some of them up, and those that are still to blind to see, can be lead away down some other blind alley, by the blind Sports Media. <cool>
 
might sound out of order but I don't think you don't deserve your players or anything I just think your likely to let them go.

Bale is class would love to see him in a United shirt, swap for nani? Haha

Anyway you've been more of a force recently so should be easier to keep hold of people. Can't see bale going anywhere for a while.

I would disagree with this.

The first Spurs player who left for richer pastures was Paul Gascoigne in the early 1990s.

Since then, there's been a handful of other players who have left Spurs for richer clubs but not too many in the grand scheme of things (Sheringham, Carrick, Berbatov & Keane being the most notable ones).

Modric left earlier this season for Real Madrid but the exact circumstances of Van der Vaart's move to Hamburg remain something of a mystery.
 
Unfortunately, we no longer are a big club, in the sense of winning major honours. We used to be, but then so did Villa, Notts Forest, Wolves, etc. The Gooners used to be a big club, but they are now just also rans.

Fair point, as I wasn't suggesting we have always been a selling club (I just worded it incorrectly) as spurf points out we used to be a "big club", the real glory days, however much of what I said I would say is true, as in my lifetime, eachtime we have been on the verge of building a great squad, we have sold key players.

You mention Gazza, but we also sold Waddle & Hoddle (yes towards the end of his career) but its another case of us selling.

If you assess our squad during the 21st century, we sell/lose our best players at times when we should be in a position to build a squad, be that Carrick, Sheringham, Judas, Berba, Modric, VDV and lets not forget for a large part since the premier league started we have generally been mediocre in the league, so we haven't been signing top class players each year.

But the key point, is the timing, and timing is everything!

Also, there was Jurgen, we could only hold onto him for a season, namely because it was clear we couldn't offer a player of his standing what he deserved, yet in many ways that was a season for the memory, as by right we shouldn't have been in a position to sign such a world class striker.

The 90's in general (after gazza/venables/linekar) was mostly hard work for us in the league, as a club we had a lack of funds for signing players anyhow, but we still lost players, such as jurgen, gazza, barmby, popescu (to barca) and while all clubs lose players, generally we lost all our talented players for the same reason, which is we can't match their ambitions (or they are homesick :biggrin:)

The only way for this club to build a squad and keep great players, is to show/prove we're a big club, that can match their ambitions, yet the reality for me seems that we're essentially too much of a business and we're attempting to flirt with the big boys (queue dodgy comments) with no real hope of actually achieving much success, other then a decent league finish and a good cup run.

I don't think it was quite like that was it?, Ithought selling Gazza was Sugars first exercise in reducing Scholars debt that nearly bust the club, assets had to go.

I'm not so sure. These are players that will command interest from more than one club, so we can be choosy .
In the end we always sell . The cheaper replacements tend not to be in the same class as our golden trio.
Dembele is not in the same class but is good.
I would call this more a Pyrrhic victory or a child having some wonderful Christmas presents but they are eventually taken from them .
