Speed cameras in 30 mph limits fine by me, a big no on national limit roads, worse than speeding are the tossers that constantly drive at 20 mph below the limit on national speed limit roads and brake on slip roads onto dual carriageways, we have plenty in Northumberland and not all old twats either, one of my nephews is 29 and a **** driver who does this, I can't get in a car with him driving anymore, last straw was stopping at roundabouts when they are totally clear just in case.
People who drive at 40 in a 60 on country roads are utter ****s. Of those utter ****s the ****iest ****s are those braking around corners at 40 and or doing a wide racing line at 40! ****s.
A two year old would almost certainly die if hit by a vehicle at 30mph. And I personally don't take flashing indicators as Gospel. I ignore them - pulling out in front of someone whose indicating to turn left, then being ran into wouldn't cost the other driver.
Drivers of ANY make of car /van /taxis can all be extremely selfish and dangerous. I can't pinpoint a particular make stereotype. What I would assert though is that in merging traffic, when thoughtful drivers stick to the turns each of traffic flow, it's very rare to see a woman let anybody into traffic. They seem to have a confidence issue with communicating with other drivers. I've done my advanced driving. I've given time to teach advanced driving. I don't tailgate as it really doesn't help. And as I'm applying for Mr Popular on here, I must defend SOME BMW drivers, they're bloody good cars
Just noticed DPP's point and now your point re collisions at 30 mph. Link below giving statistical data. Not advocating speeding just because someone may not be killed but just trying to put everything into the right context. http://www.safespeed.org.uk/killspeed.html I would guess a 2 yo is probably more at risk than a 10 yo but there is no "almost certainly" about it as opposed to a "more probably". Sorry if I'm being pedantic but I don't think exaggerating a position helps a point being made and I'm not suggesting it was a deliberate exaggeration either. Bottom line is speeding can kill but I stand by my earlier point that someone speeding at 65 mph in a 30 mph zone should receive a much stiffer penalty than someone speeding at 35 mph in a 30 mph zone. And by the way Consett, just for clarification for Consett Analytica, is it an Audi or a BMW that you drive?
I'm aware of the stats re collisions and probabilities of fatalities. And as you point out, the risk of death for a 2 year old is theoretically higher than an for older child. But I doubt if there's good quality data for two year old fatalities. Speeding in 30 zones, even by a small amount is serious. I accept that. To kill somebody by speeding would ruin my life.
Did my driving awareness course last night - Less likely to kill a child (upto 15) than an OAP as "children" bounce" although that doesn't rule out serious life changing injuries. Speeding by 5MPH in a 30 zone can cause impact speed of an extra 18 MPH - doesn't sound much but when you put 2 tonne of weight behind that 18mph its enough to kill easily - don't think it sounds much ask your mate to drive their car at you at 18mph - you wouldn't stand there. That's in dry conditions having noticed the person at a safe distance (if driving at 30) and you've got the best brakes/ABS etc. One of the questions they asked us was to list the reasons we speed e.g. lateness or anger etc and then once we'd written that list down to pretend you are in court having killed someone and explain to the family of the deceased why you were speeding - your excuses for speeding sound ridiculous at this point - I'd suggest trying it with family at home really makes you think. Lesson learned for me...
I've worked in an Accident and Emergency dept when a child, about 4, was brought in after being hit by a car on a nearby street. DOA unfortunately. That memory doesn't leave you.
