I think that's a bit harsh. Many were inept, but there was plenty of passion on show last night & there had to be or else McStoke would have spanked us good and proper.
I'm trying to think of any player past or present who Lambert reminds me of and I'm struggling. He's not a traditional centre forward and yet he can play that role; he's comfortable on the ball and can happily drift back into midfield or even to the wings. I really can't think of anyone to compare him with.
Spoke to my brother earlier and he said he read something on the Echo site that might be a very interesting pub question in a few years. Q who was the first person to score in an England game without kicking a ball? A Rickie Lambert his first ever touch in an England shirt was his Headed goal
I said that literally just before the corner on the match thread haha! It got lost in all the screams of celebration immediately after.
I agree. He is quite unique in a way and you can't pigeon hole him exactly. He sort of falls between being a holding/creative midfielder and a striker.
I think when this thread falls inactive for a bit, the mods should lock it and end it with a post of the goal...
Found it! 9:32 I posted this as Baines ran over for the corner. Ball hit the net about 20 seconds later

West Ham United's £16 million striker Andy Carroll is not expected to make his return to Premier League action until mid-September.The club's record signing has been struggling with a heel injury since the end of last season and is still understood to be a month away from a return. Carroll has pencilled in the match at the St Mary's Stadium against Southampton for his return immediately following the international break. A club source told SportsDirect News exclusively: "That seems the most likely scenario although obviously nothing is written in tablets of stone." That will make it interesting!
Mauricio Pochettino: "We're very happy with Rickie Lambert's performance last night. He did ever so well, we're so pleased for him."
