I was at the pre-season talk given by Evans - when he told us that O'Gilvie wouldn't be playing at Left Back - so what does he do against Reading ?

O'Gilvie is NOT a leftback ! --I cringed when I saw him fail miserably in that role. He illustrated this so well in the 80th minute. He was forced to 'bring down' a Reading right-sided forward - who was about to 'walk' past O'Gilvie -- who would have been booked in a 'normal' game............

.....and apart from Jackson's long throw-ins, I wasn't overly impressed by his positional awareness - very often being nowhere near the left-sided Reading forward.

When the season starts, our fullbacks will need to be better and sharper - to prevent what may be a lot of crosses coming into the middle of our penalty box.

Reading weren't that great. Neither sides made too many chances - although Bonham did pull off a couple of very good saves. Gills lacked creativity. Hanlan didn't look as if he wanted to show that Gills should persuade him to sign the contract on offer (( on this showing, it might be the best he'll get ! ))
The first goal was poor defending of a corner. The 2nd goal -- literally moments later was very annoying. ... an obvious and unprofessional lack of focus to allow the loss of possession and Reading 'walking' through the middle of the Gills line..................... oh well, it wasn't the real thing.

I am not surprised or upset by the difference in class, I am not surprised or upset by having 11 strangers not looking like a team.
All of the above can be worked on, what I am upset about was the difference in effort shown by us and them, not closing down, not working harder when not in possession, effort should be the same whether you play in the premiership or southern league, it is not based on skill or ability, it's just down to attitude.

I am sure that Ogivile played left back for second half of season and won player of year for it.<cool>

Yes he was. Fuller righback Tucker and Ehmer center backs Ogivile left back. Ogivile played centre half before Tucker there whilst O Conner was left back. O Conner then went in midfield
 
I too did not want Ogivile to play left back but he did well there. Yes he did get forward more but still as a left back. Similar to Roberson at Liverpool. You could say wing back but normally you have 3 centre half's.

Leftback was filled by Tom O'Connor for most games last season. When O'Gilvie was used in that position, we always looked vulnerable with his shortcomings - not least lack of pace - as he reminded me against Reading.

Your comparison of O'Gilvie and Robertson made me laugh. You should have put it into gumpygrit's trivia quiz...
Question - What has O'Gilvie got in common with Andrew Robertson ( a proper left back ), of Liverpool ?
Answer - The number of letters in their Christian name ! ( depending on how you spell it )....

ps...... I can forgive you for misspelling Robertson - but not for getting it wrong with a Gills player....... mind you - even the Official Gillingham FC website don't know how to correctly spell O'Gilvie's name l

OGIVILE. Played mostly left back after Christmas. O Conner lost his place in team and when returned played mostly left midfield. :1980_boogie_down:

One thing of which I am always right, is that Gills do NOT have a player named OGIVILE ...... occasionally I am happy to be pedantic.
 
Who would have thought that a garden implement would get a mention in a football forum ?........... but - people often confuse a shovel for a spade !

I have no problem in conceding that O'Gilvie ( known by me as Mr. Shovel ), and ( not Ogivile ), was greatly improved last season. I maintain that was because of his 'forward' play.

O'Gilvie (not Ogivile ) may well have been 'placed' on the left side of our defence on many occasions last season. I might be pedantic - but I do not consider that, when O'Gilvie (not Ogivile ), was used as the left 'sided' defender in a '' back three'', that he could be considered as a conventional left back - but - on this point we'll split hairs until the cows come home !

When O'Gilvie (not Ogivile) was used in a back three, I paid particular attention to him. When it became necessary for him to move over towards the area normally occupied by a conventional left back, he wasn't very good at the role ---

---- just like against Reading - and that is the main point of my argument. It doesn't matter how many times O'Gilvie or anyone called Ogivile plays at left back, just ONE performance reminds us that O'Gilvie is a liability at left back ---------- perhaps we should give Ogivile a chance ? .............................. a left-sided defender isn't necessarily a left back..... and I do know that you won't properly dig your garden with a shovel

Considering that AYRton has been mentioned in another thread - it appears that silliness has become the new normal in this forum ..........so - let me try to confuse you a bit more;

It's as well that Gills don't employ a 'Sweeper ' system. You would expect that the Sweeper would be called Mr.Broom - but knowing what Gills can afford, the reality would be that we'd have a Mr.Brush in that role ( although certain members might spell it Shrub ! )
