Sooner or later you have to find out if they're match-fit. If they'd thrown Archer in and he'd failed, the questions would abound about why they left Anderson out when he said he felt fit enough and the docs agreed. Maybe they need to select more hindsight before each match in this series.
Moeen Ali has taken more wickets than anybody in the last year, which is why he was in the team, but his confidence has obviously become a factor and he looks like the most obvious to be replaced after Anderson. The question is do the selectors have the bottle to replace more than two?

Well that was pants. Didn’t help with jimmy being injured for most of the game so being s bowler down but pretty much summed up by Lyon taking 9 wickets and Ali, Denleh and root taking 3 between them in tbhe whole game.
Ali surely has to be dropped. Woefully out of form with bat and ball. Archer has to come in next game just to add some freshness and spark.

Utter ****e. Lyon turning them at right-angles: Ali lobbing slow, straight pies. If we don't win the Lord's test (and we won't) it's all over. No ****ing way these turds will win three on the trot against these Aussies. Especially not as we get into September.

Lets take it into context. England played with 10 men for all but four overs of the match. Would be surprised to see Moeen in at Lords. Adil and Curran to come in for Ali and Jimmy
Sort of, They subbed him for fielding the entire match (aside from that first morning), often with someone who is a better fielder like Curran. And Anderson is very much a number 11 batsman and did still bat, nothing much lost.
The only thing they lost with him was his bowling, yet Australia played with only 4 recognised bowlers, the same as England ended up with. The difference was the quality, Lyon was far superior to Moeen and the seamers got far more out of the pitch than the English.
England's batting has been poor recently, they seem only to manage 1 innings per match. This could be because the focus has been on the one day format in order to win the World Cup in recent years.
Similar for the bowlers, first innings great, second they looked tired and uninspired.
Would not be shocked to see Rashid in at Lords and Curran. Woakes and Stokes are more all rounders IMO than out and our strike bowlers. Broad did well, the Aussies benefited from a ball change that was rejected by the Umpires for England and that’s also helped.
Silly shot selection and great show by Smith have helped in the second innings after close 1st.
Maybe Archer if he can get overs in, he has that pace and bounce that will cause issues at Lords.

Archer will be in the team. They can’t not play him after this performance. Curran is really unlucky to miss out. Interesting that woakes only bowled 7 overs despite being fit and England being one bowler doen
Could be carrying knocks, World Cup Wum was great. But being short for the Ashes is a mistake.
Archer/Curran and Adil to come in for me.
The hyperbolic media kneejerk has begun: "England have prioritised the white ball game and ignored test play"; "Australia are amazing, Lyon is the DBs," etc etc.
Imagine them writing the Aussie summary after day one: "What's happened to Aussie cricket? Swept aside in the World Cup semi-final by England and now humiliation awaits from the old enemy at 122 for 8 after just one day of an Ashes series. Woe, woe and thrice woe...Warner's confidence is shot...Lyon looking impotent in his first spell..."
Before the prioritising of the one day side, England were the #1 test team. Now we're #1 in ODI. Woe, woe and thrice woe. Since they were beaten 4-0 in Australia, their test record is 9 wins and 5 losses, including beating the #1 test side 4-1 just a year ago. This is hardly a classic Aussie side and they had some occasional performances on an easy wicket that could easily have come from an England player. England were still ahead after three days but the bowling attack was nobbled by day 4 and turn was predicted for day 5, when surprise of surprises, Lyon capitalised on it. Big woo.
Changes need to be made but with cool heads, not this rampant pessimism.

Hes played a couple of 20/20 games and he had a break after WC and said he just needed a bit of time to recover which couldn’t get in WC due to time turn around so imagine he’ll be fine.
He didnt actually miss any games ublike anderson who was our for months and hadn’t actually bowled one ball before the ashes

True, but some players are out of form, were so against Ireland even even before that. Smith has scored more runs in 2 innings that moeen has since 2016 I believe I read.
Obviously sweeping changes wont help, essentially because we don’t have the options to come in for them to be honest.
