Mcmanaman seemed to care though.. He appeared to try. Gerrard for me seemed to be anonymous in 'some' England games. Page: agreed great players win trophies but I'd say man for man England have had great players over the last 15 years or so. We have always seemingly been unlucky with key players being injured in tournaments or coming back from serious injury. We have also had players who didn't seem to care. For me we would have won euro 96 had venebles put beckham in the team. That euro squad was the last England team I loved.
Look no further than the FA's choice of England managers down the years for England's lack of international success.
Seems a fair point. And Sweats, I am glad someone else realised Rio was one of Englands best performers of the last decade. The amount of people who say hes rubbish for England is mind boggling. Back to Gerrard. As has been stated, he never ever reached the level for England he so often did for Liverpool. I hear him getting praised for doing nothing or for making a cross in a game. None of the grab the game by the scruff stuff at Liverpool. Wouldnt get wound up by it, change Gerrards name for anyone of 50 England players over the last decade and the same applies. United players included.
Agreed. Venebles should have stayed in the job for me. Hoddle was ok, but too soon in his career and since ruined his career. Keegan I liked the man but was tactically inept. Sven.. I liked him but he almost suffered because he didnt know what our best team was and was the first one to experience the Lampard/ Gerrard conundrum. Fabio utter toss. Woy jury is still out, we just dont have the players we once did. I'd have preferred Redknapp as England boss myself.
Dont agree with that. Scholes was great for england as was Beckham, as was rio as was neville. of current squad, rooney isnt consistent enough. Carrick not really an international class player .
Gary Neville would have got half the amount of caps had Rob Jones not had to retire early Edit: this is just my opinion of course, who knows what would have actually happened. Neville linked up well with Beckham though
I remember Rob Jones playing for England against France in a friendly. We won 2-0 I think. Maybe it was his debut which is why I associate the game with him. I also have a feeling that someone of note scored both the goals. Going to look it up now! EDIT: yep it was Jones' debut. I was half right about the goals. Shearer got one on his debut. Shagger Lineker got the other.
He was an excellent player Rob Jones, came off Dario Gradi's production line at Crewe, a real shame that his career ended so early.
Nail on the head there. "Roy, what do you think about the sky being blue?" "Actually, I've always thought it was more of a turquoise" His job as a pundit seems to be to disagree with everything that everyone else says.
Imagine him alongside Garth Crooks. "What the feck are you talking about Garth, that's absolute ****e."
Hello mate. Thanks for providing an outlet for my spleen-venting last night The thing is, Keane wasn't presented with a question he could disagree with per se. It was "So Roy. Stevei Gerrard?" to which he immediately replied not a great player. No reference to purely his England career. Just as Steven Gerrard, footballer. Then bigging up Welbeck alone after the match
Does anyone genuinely think he's earned 100 caps for being anonymous? This has been talked to death, Gerrard suffered for his adaptability. He was shunted all over the place to accommodate Lampard. Frank got the glamour role, whereas Stevie put in solid, but not eye-catching performances out of position, with little fuss. It's called being professional.
