Rewarding Failure?

Discussion in 'Arsenal' started by The Magic Man, Mar 28, 2012.

  1. Don't contest that at all. Agree fully. I am just saying that he has made several errors.

Most other managers making several mistakes at the level Wenger has would be 'let go'.
Its a brutal business - hence £7m per year or whatever he is paid.

Well then we're pretty much on the same page. Other than that errors are only deduced with the benefit of hindsight.

For example, Squillaci was playing at the top level with Seville and as a proven international player looked every bit a good signing. Turns out he's a turkey for us, but who was saying that when we signed him ?

  4. That was indeed my point about him being paid to get it right. We probably have in the region of £20m a year being wasted on players with large contracts that have never and will never be good enough.

On balance, I would say that he's got a lot more right that he's got wrong.

  6. I did after his first game. As BTDM points out Wenger is paid to make the calls. Signing Squillaci was a huge mistake.

Yes, but only with the benefit of hindsight. The only way to address the problem now is to clear out the deadwood, which I believe the club will attempt to do this summer.

PNE - err Squishy was ALREADY a failure. <laugh> His agent must have laughed for weeks when we signed him.

  10. With the benefit of hindsight we know he got it wrong and therefore he deserves the criticism.

Clichy,Toure,Lauren,Pires, Ljungberg,RVP,Song,Sagna,Petit,Adebayor and Chensey come to mind. Because if we follow your guide and say that Nasri and Anelka were unknown, then the ones I listed are also unknown.

  12. No I don't actually.

  13. Pires was not unknown, neither was RVP (he was very well known as having great talent with an iffy mentality), neither was Ljungberg (well known as one of the quickest players around with the ball at his feet).

Also, PNE, Nasri was very well known - as well known as Hazard is now.

I am going by PNEawf's guide to the unknown. If Nasri was an unknown then all the players I listed are the same, if you follow the same guide.

Only if you point to someone better that he could have signed who was available at the time withinn our budget. Once again you tend to rate players and Wenger against a standard of success. If not signing Squilacci and playing a youth team CB instead would have resulted in us losing every match and dropping out of the top 4, then signing Squillacci was not wrong.

You are assuming that Squillacci was signed with the intent of being something other than a stop-gap emergency cover.

I don't know why Squillacci was signed, but all I am saying is neither do you.

I don't know why Squillacci was signed,

Is there anyone who thinks it was a reasonable signing? Wenger was shafted by some agent good and proper.

He was starting in a team like Seville (who were very good back then) and was part of a defence that reached a CL final. Also he made the squad for a World Cup. So you can see why Wenger thought he could do a decent job. Problem was TV got injured and we had two CB's playing in a new league. Squillacci would not have been as bad if he played alongside TV.

Nah. Anelka was a sensation for PSG. He was as well known as Nasri was. Anelka was the next wonder kid from France and he was known.

Yeh he needs to make a judgement call and we should rate him on the basis of these judgements. Overall his judgement has been poor recently.
