And new trends More people are going to the cinema than at any time since the 1970s, with 2018 on course to be a record year for the big screen. Phil Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association, said admissions were on course to hit 176 million for the whole of 2018 - the highest since 1970 and six million up from 2017. Box office takings are expected to reach between £1.33bn and £1.35bn by the end of the year. Much of the success is down to the strength of the year's blockbuster movie offering, Mr Clapp explained.... ............................................................................. Vinyl records are making a massive comeback... Coffee shops everywhere...More people than ever seem to be dining out and the choices are fantastic.... So whilst pubs are in decline, some old trends are returning, and more people are doing other stuff. do you partake in any of these and how often?
It's not a returning trend I'm talking about. A trend I'm seeing now is that pubs that have been closing down left right and centre over the last two decades are now starting to open back up as cannabis clubs, which has more than a hint of irony about it.
Good to see vinyl making a comeback. Good news for the old boy in Brighton (if he’s still there, haven’t been back to check this year) who has owned a record shop near the station since the 1960’s, and refused point blank ever to stock CD’s. That old boy’s contempt for CD’s is matched only by a black cabbie mate of mine’s hatred of satnavs. They might both have a point, my phone autocorrects ‘satnavs’ to ‘satans’
Really? Isn't cannabis is still illegal? Here in Leicester they had a bunch of shisha cafes open up a few years back - all fell foul of the smoking ban so closed a couple of months after.
All of the big films are franchises now - Marvel movies are the best example as a new one comes out every couple of months which keeps people interested. Also prices are less stupid now - a couple of years back prices were around £15 for tickets. Last time I went a couple of months back, it cost me £8.
More the reason why I’ve not been. I don’t think there has been a decent film released all year. That said I only like going to the cinema to watch a sci fi epic.
There’s actually a brilliant little independent cinema in Newlyn. Its really small, 2 screens that seat around 40 people each, with fabulous big comfy chairs. It’s got a proper restaurant upstairs and you can order wine and cocktails to be brought to your seat in the auditorium.
Yeah, obscure Cuban avant garde films. In all seriousness, they do show independent films, but most of it is mainstream releases as that’s what brings the money in. It’s just a really nice place to see a film, like going to somebody’s posh house rather than a cinema.
Yeah, like that posh pool. Small and upmarket enough to feel exclusive, but accessible to 2nd hand shoe buying pikeys like me. Check their website. It’s called newlyn filmhouse
