The Weatherbys Return of Mares was released earlier this week, containing the details of all foals born in Great Britain and Ireland in 2015 along with the covering numbers of all stallions based in the two countries.

There are bound to be certain stallions or mares that people want to know about so do ask the question and I’ll get the answer for you. Note that I’ve only got access to the book today and any other queries will have to wait until next week when I’m back in the office.

The key stats to note are:

13 stallions covered over 200 mares, all of them standing in Ireland and the majority NH sires:

Fame and Glory - 327
Ocovango - 306
Leading Light - 305
Getaway - 295
Yeats - 288
Shirocco - 267
Mahler - 260
Dylan Thomas - 259
Imperial Monarch - 259
Westerner - 238
Kodiac - 232
Dark Angel - 225
Milan - 208

As far as the leading flat sires go:

Galileo - 181
Dubawi - 160
Cape Cross - 114
Dark Angel - 225
Oasis Dream - 130
Dansili - 106
Invincible Spirit - 149
Teofilo - 120
Shamardal - 131

Of course everyone will want to know about Frankel whose book has actually decreased this year from in 126 2014 to 108 in 2015. The main reason for this will be the pool of high-class mares. There are a finite number of top level mares that visit the very best stallions and it is likely that breeders are moving their mares between the top four or five stallions. The key for Frankel will be to see how breeders react once his first runners have hit the track, though of course we will have to wait until the end of 2017 to see the impact on his books.

I’ll do my usual update on Frankel’s book’s on the separate dedicated threads.

Yes, they marketed him as flat ("boutique" I believe they refered to him as!) to begin with and tried to price him out of the regular NH breeder's range at €10,000, but it was inevitable. He's been moved Coolmore's "middle" stud (the elite flat stallions are at Coolmore proper, the dual purpose at Castle Hyde Stud and the proper NH boys are at Grange Stud) and his fee has dropped to €6,000 in the past few years.

Just got my RoM and find it extraordinary that Godolphin are using Dubawi quite so much themselves. I could understand a max of 20% but it is far higher than that.

On the downside I was sorry to see Philip Freedman lost 2 mares this year. I hope Singersongwriter's foal is OK.

I think it's safe to say that the majority of Dubawi's book are Dubai mares, be it in the Darley/Godolphin name or under the name of cousins/associates. It is much the same with Galileo, though Coolmore use a lot more pseudonyms.

A quick run down of Dubawi's book and I count just 63 of the 160 covered as owned by non-family members/business associates.

Galileo I'm estimating (as I can't be 100% sure on all the Coolmore connections) that just 64 of the 181 mares covered were true "outside" mares.

The Royal Stud was fortunate to have 4 nominations this year to Dubawi which is out of character for them to send so many mares to one stallion. Galileo does not register. Strangely 3 went to Toronado(?).
