..fryatt should have scored more with the chances hes had.. but if the likes of stewart/brady/mclean/evans/mckenna chipped in, it wouldnt be as noticeable, when we went up before campbell and deano got 29 between them i think, nothing overly spectacular in all honesty..but folan, pedersen, marney turner, even ashbee chipped in with a few to help out
Fryatt obviously is not the problem, he's our top scorer after all and can not shoulder the blame. The problem is that other players are not chipping in. Mclean, Brady & Stewart, as good as they may be for us do not score enough goals to help us win games. Also our set pieces have been abysmal all season so we arnt getting the odd goal from defenders either. This is why we find ourselves in the bottom 5 of the league for goals scored... swap our amazing defense with an average one and we'd be just above relegation.. This isnt barmbys fault of course as we were a low scoring team under pearson too. (although I do wonder why Barmby didnt try to correct this in January...) I would love to know if we've scored more goals per game with Barmby's new "attacking" tactics or with Pearson's defensive mentality. The answer hopefully will come next season.. An alternative tactic from Barmby allowing 2 strikers at times would help... A new striker to partner Fryatt, A player with good delivery for set pieces (hammil would have done that job) and a bloody permanent goalkeeper ! also its obvious that we need another winger to alternate with stewart... because lets face it, for whatever reason... he is not the same player anymore. in barmby & the allams we trust.
That team had a good defence like this one does but also attacked with pace and a lot of men forward (as was Browny's philosophy at that point) but this team simply doesn't attack with the bravery that one did. For every missed chance by the strikers there's also a good cross flashed across the goalmouth that no one gets near, when you see a replay you realise that only Koren and Fryatt were even in the box so it's no wonder it wasn't converted. Sometimes Fryatt is involved in the buildup so only Koren is in the box. Far too timid IMO.
i agree, did you notice every time blackpool went forward, they had 4 or 5 men in the box, and most other teams do as well.... too many of our players hang back, the wingers as i keep moaning about never bust a gut to get to the back stick, mckenna and evans/oli sit to deep, every time koren gets the ball in "the hole" he looks up and only has 1 option..thats why dawson has to keep bombing forward because nobody else does..it should be stewart or mclean sprinting through..thats why all out attacks often look so slow compared to everybody elses, its the same every game tho so barmby must be happy with it or telling them to do it, because you think there instincts would be to go forward,,
I haven't given up yet myself, people are underrating the likes of getting an away point v Blackpool despite not playing well, if we play well the goals and points will rack up and it is noticeable that Matty is starting to find the back of the net again, who's to say somebody else won't start chipping in too?
Completely agree with this. If Brady is crossing from the right you expect to see Stewart at the back post as well as Fryatt and Koren and Evans bursting in late. Obviously someone has to stay back and McKenna does that well, but whoever is next to him should be doing what Marney used to do (can't believe I'm saying that ) and make those forward runs.
your right about marney tho, ive debated it many times because he was a key player in that promotion whatever people say, and we are missing somebody of his type...he started many attacks from our own box driving forward with the ball, despite his flaws at times with the final ball...
Oli isn't match fit so you are right, we are lacking in that regard, got to be Evans doing that if selected
need to get stu elliot out that church and on the training ground talking to our wingers..he didnt get 29 goals in 1 season, taking the ball of dawsons feet near the halfway line all the time.
I agree on you saying more men need to get forward, but if we go to far we will lose our great defensive record, thats why we need to keep the shape that we do have, but we need someone like Evans who does have a good engine to get box to box to support the attack and support the defence when needed.
There's well over 100 first team strikers in this league and ours is 13th on the list(or 12th if you bear in mind that one on the list isn't even a striker), that's not bad at all.
Specially as he's one of our only 2 sources of goals, and misses more chances than a granny waiting to pull out at a junction
Cardiff in freefall? West Ham and Soton odds on automatic? March has started and both top two won away, Reading and Boro both also won away, Bpool and Brum both drew at home. Only Cardiff lost. Despite a great point on Friday, we have barely managed to keep pace. Surely not every team above us can keep that up?
I try to avoid Fryatt criticisms now because it upsets people so much (no really, I do ) but come on! He has to be the most offside player in our team! When he is offside making runs I don't mind, but it's the ones where he's coming back for the ball and still manages to be offside that do my head in.
