At the risk of sounding naive perhaps, what does rep actually do? I have the mighty power of 2 but it just seems a number with little purpose? Can someone enlighten me with its benefits...? Maybe it will help me get a payrise?

It is supposed to show when other members appreciate your quality posts, but that's not what it's used for round here. It's been adopted as a means of keeping score by some who, under the standard rules of forum etiquette, would be termed 'rep whores'. So basically it's become just what you said it is - a meaningless number.
