What's the point of sending negative rep? Why can't they say what they think via the comments they post or by PM?

The idea is that the red or green bars under your name represent your 'reputation' on the board. When people rep or negative rep another poster they are just expressing a positive or negative opinion on that user's post. If a poster receives a lot of negative rep he'll get red bars. If you receive more positive you get green bars. It's rarely used on the City board though apart from by a few of us.

They're just pointless. They're a measurement of how often you're on the site essentially.

In theory it's a bit of an advance warning to other users if you've got neg rep. If we get someone on here from another forum that's being a complete tool then we're more likely to put a ban request in straight away if they've got a neg rep than a positive one. A positive one we'd be more likely to have a word with them because the positive rep would suggest they're normally a decent poster.

In practice there's **** all point because there are people who just go around repping people in order to get repped back, knowing that if they keep doing it they'll end up with ridiculously high rep values. They're then able in one shot to neg rep someone from a positive score to a massive neg one. (the more positive rep you've received the more impact you have on another user's rep when you give them it, so if I rep someone it means more to their score than if you do)

People can like or dislike posts and it does nothing other than show up next to the post. It's mainly for agreeing or disagreeing quickly with a post quickly and avoids threads being cluttered with loads of posts just saying 'I agree'.

Yes. And the point has been raised that with rep, like/dislike, and star ratings available for threads it's overkill, but other forums use them so there's no sense in taking their toys away when we can just leave them and not use them.

It sounds utterly ****ing ridiculous to me. Can't say I'll be availing myself of the facility and I certainly won't be giving two ****s about my "score" either.

It is. Just to demonstrate my previous point about the influence of one rep from a "big hitter", I just positive repped one of your posts, and all the red cards turned to green and you're "off the scale" on the positive end.

Go back to the Soton board and have a go again if you really want it back to red.
