Estadio De La luz sounds awesome.

Let's rename it that!

Not_Cricket is more or less right, Benfica's is actually called 'Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica' and the 'Luz' bit was the district of Lisbon

NO. it is as it is,what if some clown, like FAT ASH, with loadsa dosh, wanted to call it the TAMPAX stadium, just for money,,,,,,,WOULD YOU WANT OR LIKE THAT?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Pick a better subject as a thread mate.

Lord forgive me for creating a thread to debate. I beg of your forgiveness bill.

Think re-naming the ground is worthy of discussion. Forget what 'BellofEngland' says- hes a cantankerous old fool--who if he wasnt so old would come and knock you out--like he used to do to the Rockers in the old days!! :steam:

I have never stated we should rename the stadium. I'm not saying we should take any old bid, Tampax or I love the mag'[email protected].
Just saying alot of people were not happy with the name to start with. If Quinn had scouted and found a world renowned name(not tombola)who were willing to give us a massive amount of money. Surely we would have to consider it?

Bigchris Corner?

I like and would stick with SOL although I do like the sound of wearmouth stadium. I reckon the stand naming idea is a good one. Could this idea be suggested to the club with the haway the flags lads?

I've done some research and found the reasons for naming our ground "The Stadium of Light".....

The Stadium of Light was so named for two reasons; Firstly, it is built on the site of the former Monkwearmouth Colliery and the name was chosen to reflect the heritage of the area and honour the men who worked in the region's collieries. In fact outside one corner of the stadium is a giant Miners Lamp. Secondly, the name was also chosen as to 'illuminate' the way ahead for the Club'. Part of the story about the naming of the stadium was because at the top of the former colliery lift a sign read 'Into the Light'. SAFC wanted links to the industrial history of the place, hence the stadium name. The gates on the west side of the ground have 'Into the Light' written on them to recall this fact.

For these reasons, it has to remain the Stadium of Light.

Great idea to name the stands, which could generate sponsorship money, rather than naming them after some of the hero's of our past. I'd quite like sitting in the "Virgin" stand! :)

If we sold the right's it would have to be a Sunderland company who employed Sunderland people. I'd have no trouble with the NISSAN stadium for instance.

I never liked the name; simply because it wasn't original. I would have preferred to have had it named the Wearmouth Stadium or the Pit Head Arena even; something that would have commemorated our mining heritage generally and the Wearmouth Colliery where a lot of lads worked and died. That would have been fitting. If we hadn't gone down that route then I'd have been delighted if it had been named the Bob Stokoe Arena which would have been universally popular. I remember when John Fickling announced it and it was explained that it was to mark the fact that the pitch was located where the pit cage came up. It all sounded a bit lame to me and as if it was something cobbled together after the fact to lend some credibility to a name that most people thought sounded inappropriate or plagiarised or both.

The stands should have just been called the Roker and the Fulwell ends/stands IMHO.
I would hate to see the name changed to something that is corporate though, and I wouldn't want a gob full name like that ****house ten miles up the road either.
