Why don't you go and do a corporate deal with Spiller's? You could then call your plastic bowl 'The Winalot' Stadium....quite topical at the moment.

Yes mate he does indeed. So he aint gonna sponsor himself.
It's all about advertising at the olympics then he's hopin to sell the sponsorship to an outside company after that.
The club owes him £300m & he will get it back one way or another.
Although I'm a mackem, I have plenty of mag mates & from a football fans point of view he's just taking the piss.
Only 2 weeks ago he had a deal where they sold season cards for the remainder of the season for half price, so that got him an extra 4000 at the last home game.
Then he comes out with this.
The IOC won't allow it as they prohibit corporate naming rights sponsorships to be used for venue names, the same applies to the World Cup (ie: The Allianz Arena, which is it's actual name; was temporally named "The FIFA World Cup Stadium")

Only the 'top' Olympic corporate partners like; Coke, McD's, Visa etc, will get the footie hoardings methinks.

Tell you what, frattonfunkdaddy, if what you are trying to say had the tiniest grain of truth in it, you might get a rise out of Saints fans. But you know that if Portsmouth announced plans for an identical replacement stadium you'd be dancing in the street, down Milton Road way. For now, I'd get the paint pot out again at Fratton Park.
I read somewhere that it's the thickness of the multiple coats of paint that's holding some of the place up.
Whilst I would prefer SMS, I wouldn't mind the Leihberr Stadium or even a stand because it would indicate that the family were committed for a long time. Not that I think they are going in the short term, but their only emotional link is via Markus. Running a football club is not a sure fire way to make money nor does it necessarily make a decent return on capital.
I think people may be getting a little OTT on this one. Newcastle are in the Top4. Have a good chance of getting into Europe. With the Financial Fairplay rules looming it would make sense to return some capital to Ashley and then 'do a deal' with 'Sports Direct' for the stadium name.
This is all this barble is about. Man City haven't sold renaming rights for any reason other than to put more money into the club without it being capital invested which in theory is not income.
In reality like Markus' money most clubs are getting these injections the 'old way' where they come in as a loan 'to be repayed' and are written off gradually over a timeframe to avoid losing any of the injection to tax under 'gift' rules.
It's clear Ashley wants out. It's clear Ashley want his money back however for the sake of moving the club closer to the fair play rules by removing some capital which isn't income and then replacing it with 'actual' income then he prepares the club well. If they get into Europe he is much more likely to find a buyer which is what we know he wants
Then once an outside company takes the naming rights it becomes 'real' income rather than the money juggling that he (I asume) is doing at this minute.
From what I gather the Man City deal and Arsenal deals are sponsorships from people who have an interest in those football clubs anyway. It is just a case of investing non income in a way that becomes income.
As for SMS. Was it not originally to be named the Friends Provident Stadium. Then due to the outcry St Marys was tapped onto the end? Only later on was the sponsorship dropped. I mean 'The Flybe St Marys Stadium' or ' The Aap St Mary's Stadium' Neither of these would be great. The latter would have opposing fans making monkey calls to us (ape)

I only hope that when...eventually something happens down at the Park, it won't be based on the one size fits all economy bowl that was the rage a few years back. At least our friends up the road in Brighton had the right approach when constructing their fabulous new place with a bit of identity and class about it. Just be thankful you'll have a roof over your head if you're one of the brave souls venturing down our way on the 18th!
On the subject of renaming stadiums; would anyone object to St Marys being renamed The Liebherr Stadium?
This of course would act as sponsorship for the mammoth manufacturing company that is The Liebherr Group and at the same time be a fitting dedication to the man that saved our football club.

I was under the impression that Marcus Liebherr handed/sold all of his shares of the Liebherr Group back to his family many years ago and started his own group of companies (Mali).
Wouldn't it be more fitting to have a stadium showing support/sponsorship for his company rather than one he had nothing to do with.

I'd be gutted if SMS was renamed after some foreign airline as some have suggested. Why on earth would anyone want that? What exactly is wrong with just keeping it St. Mary's Stadium?

And our good friends down at Brighton had to make their stadium in the fashion it has been, otherwise they would never have obtained the planning permission. It had to be relatively unobtrusive within the landscape, if that's possible for a football stadium.
You guys desperately need a new ground, because Fratton Park has long since had its day.
