Ah! those were the days players whose wages Clubs could actually afford, and terraces where fans were on their feet, literally. A 1st division clash, Millwall / City, Jan 1989, which included that rarest of commodities, an Ian Butterworth goal, and the winner from Fleck, which is still one of the best goals ever scored by a City player, imo. Not that I´m expecting to see its like this weekend, but a repeat of the result and scoreline would be a tentative step in the right direction.
A repeat of the scoreline would I think be more of a stumble than a step in the right direction. OK if the 2 Millwall goals are worldies fine, but if they are the result of more ametuerish City defending then it's a stumble for me. We'll get nowhere without a more stout defense. Bah!
Any sort of win away would be a step in the right direction, Melchy, as they continue to be singularly hard to come by, even under German High Command.
My formative NCFC terrace years were spent watching this excellent team. Used to love the varied atmospheres offered by the away support in the Barclay. Millwall always a little tense!
Christ Almighty. I was 45 - Thanks for making me feel very old!! Incidentally I was at the game as well.
On the subject of trips down memory lane Dave I was in Lincoln visiting my Daughter whilst in the UK recently and managed to see Lincoln play. My Missus never ceases to be amazed at how coincidental it is that our visits to relatives and friends collide with football matches, beer festivals and golf foursomes who are one short!! Anyway, you would not recognise Sincil Bank from when you last saw it. Still a bit of work to do but already up to a high standard for a lower league Club. The area around the ground remains the same although they have cleaned up the canal at the back. You could actually see fish in it rather than supermarket trolleys!!
Mmmm! - 2-3 would have looked pretty good right now, don´t you think? - Forget who the manager is, typical Norwich, if a side, especially down the bottom, want a bit of a lift, just invite Norwich, that´ll do the trick
...and incidentally, well done Alex Neil, great point today at Middlsbro, and 4 clean sheets in 5 games - sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.
