Can't believe the number of people who've no knowledge of St Charles ! My paternal ancestors arrived from Ireland over a hundred years ago and it's played a huge part in the lives of my extended family - Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 3 Great Uncles all lost their lives between 1915-1917 - they're all named on the St Charles War Memorial just to the left as you enter. My Grandfather joined up at the same time but was returned home when the military discovered he was only 15 I've never been religious but I still gaze in awe at the beauty of St Charles.
I would imagine this is because the religious history of Hull is predominantly protestant. St Charles Borromeo is a remarkable building to be located in the heart of Georgian Hull as the period was dominated by protestantism and homage to the great deliverer King Billy. When the new Georgian Town was laid out around Kingston Square on the current site of the 'New' Theatre stood the Hull Protestant Institute, later used as the repertory theatre.
Great building this , even more remarkable because of the ridiculous building on Bond St that almost obliterates it ,
Further to the posts on the church appeal I see it was awarded £246,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund in October 2013 for repairs to the roof which was leaking. Google Earth for October 2015 shows the front facade encased in scaffolding/sheeting so it may or may not have been completed.
