So by that logic, if we'd have hung onto him for another 10 years we'd have won the league then?

The continuity doesn't NOT outweigh copious amounts of cash, that's total poppycock. Moyes merely used his resources well, made very few mistakes in the market & made some very astute purchases for relative peanuts. Sure continuity helps in terms of stability at the club, but in no way is it a substitute for cold hard cash. Just look at City & Chelsea, little continuity, massive amounts of cash = success.

As for your 'transition' period. I would say last season could be classified that way, but in previous ones you've just been pretty average & there was nothing being 'built'.

Well no .... by that logic he'd have kept you punching above your weight and finishing in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th [in any order you like] for the next 10 years, and not where on paper you should be.

I don't think you understand the term transition btw, plus you seem to think I'm placing far more importance on it than I actually am!

I also said continuity helps to outweigh cash not it's a downright fact. There's a sporting concept 'the smart take from the strong' and that's exactly what Moyes did for you lot for the reasons you quote.

I keep making the point in betteen the sly digs at everton that i am suarely laying the blame on david moores' door step. this hands off ho god do i have to make a decision mentality cost us all through. he then sold to guys who bankrupted us. So in the end the previous years? FSG came in, knew nohting and in case you missed this one tobes it took how long for citeh with the billions? I think forgiving putting dalglsih in and taking too long to sack hodgson and such can be done. that does not say they have the plan. its like saying knewright is actually the guy who had the plan with moyes all along and its him everyone ought to be ball licking right now... knewirght lucked into moyes we all know it.... with any luck at all martinez wil be as bad defensively and ruin all moyes good work <ok>

seriously though..... hodgson, dlaglish, rodgers... dare i say it it takes longer than 6-18months to truely build something..... ergo people cannot say and i have NEVER said rodgers should be sacked this year if he doesn't deliver the impossible. last year... transition... meh... this year rebuilding... not sure its that yet.

on a more serious note "the smart take form the strong" is that why everotn became utd reserves?

no but reall on a serious not about that quote. the amount of value that there is in picking the bones of Chelsea and city's profligate spending is astounding. best i saw was duff for 17mil, sold for 5. the question merely is whether they bought anyone good enough to pick off... sturridge is good but injury prone. It could be aguero in a couple year... or say lescott and the like. if mata was actually put as makeweight for rooney that would be utd being very smart indeed..

It's a bit of a David and Goliath thing that quote - to make it fuller - the strong take from the weak and the smart take from the strong. If you have guile, tact and desire to win you can out-manoeuvre a stronger side, we see it all the time just not consistently because unlike Goliath, when you take down one giant, the next appears.

We've got the edges in place but lost the lid off the box so don't know what the picture looks like we're trying to build <laugh>

The Carroll thing was a reaction to losing Torres. He had just pocketed 50 million but lost Torres. Desperate for a quick replacement to placate fans, he went for Carroll. Fat Mike saw him coming and could not wait to pull the sucker punch. That is what he was thinking

We're missing one or two edges but Ayre has the pieces over the floor looking for them. <laugh>
