Bobby Robson? Bill Shankly? Jumpers for goalposts? What a load of self-serving, sentimental ****e. It's great that you love your team but to believe that the relationship should be reciprocal is to ignore reality. You might as well bemoan your relationship with Asda. Grow up.
Not surprised a tongue in cheek quote such as this one has gone a-whooshing with some. I don't know how many decades have passed since it was first uttered, but it's admirable to see that it's still possible for some to generate a bit of belated outrage.
If a football club is no more than a business you buy from, why do we bother supporting our **** local team? We could get better quality football cheaper elsewhere.
A football club is a business and you choose to support your local team, it's not compulsory. You could support Barcelona if you'd prefer.
And in one post you've eloquently explained why I have no interest in your opinion on any footballing matter If you felt like a lot on here, whose opinions I am interested in, you wouldn't feel you had a choice I went to shop earlier and I chose to go to Morrisons because it was closer and I only wanted a couple of things, I normally choose to go to Waitrose because I prefer their stuff, and it's quieter. I therefore "support" them both at times, depending on the circumstances This has about as much to do with football as the lager I'm currently drinking has to do with those strange blue power drinks footballers drink ( today I'm supporting Grolsch by the way) Hull City AFC... it's more of a life sentence than a choice. Feel free to choose someone else to "support"next season, thanks
You are one of those posters who explain the lack of atmosphere in the KC given your detachment from the team. I think, most would prefer for your types to sod off and "support" Barcelona or someone else.
Not sure about Heysel, but don't you think the football community have helped the families of the 96 over the years? I think what Shankley was talking about was the importance of community and the importance of football in building a community.
Bobby Robson, a great man. Doesn't mention the name though does he? Guess it wasn't that important to him.
I seem to remember Shankly was a rather tragic figure after he retired - didn't know how to fill his days, and he would turn up at Melford to watch training because he missed it all so much. So I guess football pretty much was his life.
He used to retire every year cos of the pressure before being persuaded not to. Eventually he became a bit of a nuisance to Paisley and was asked not to go down anymore. He used to go to Everton after that.
