I think he is trying to make the balance sheet look as strong as possible. Use Rafa to survive by the skin of his teeth and maybe sell at the end of this season. A new owner then gets a prem club, with a healthy balance sheet and can pick his own manager. Ashley gets the money he wants aswell.
