Rate last summers signs

Allen is a great little player....just too lightweight. If it gets physical, he disappears. Looking forward to seeing Can play in CM next season.

 

When rating players, I guess it's important to look at their value for money, so in that light these are my ratings:

Lambert - 7 - 4 million. Bought as a backup. Done what was expected of a £4million quid over 30yo striker.
Lallana - 6 - Underwhelming, shown glimpses of brilliance, but he was an expensive signing and has been injured quite a lot. If he were early 20s then I'd be positive about his future, but at nearly 27 he should be in his prime now.
Lovren - 3 - **** **** player.
Markovic - 4 - I was one of the few (perhaps) that thought even in Portugal he looked above average. He's had a few flashes of good play, but other than that? Forgettable. The fact that Mourinho passed on buying him for £13m with their first option clause last summer says it all, especially when Chelsea are in the habit of hoovering up young talent across the board and sending them out on loan. His one saving grace is he's young, but so was Borini, and he continues to be a disappointment to this day.
Moreno - 6 - If there was some way to merge him and Enrique, then that would be good. He's young, so hopefully his defensive ability will improve as he gets older. He's made some sloppy errors at time, but then again "welcome to the premier league young lad". Willing to give the benefit of the doubt - I do think we should persevere with him at LB.
Manquillo - 6 - a two year loan signing with £4m option to buy? What's not to like to be honest. Has looked keen when he's played and more reliable than GJ. hope he gets given more time next season.
Balotelli - 4 - It was always going to be a risk. I still think it was a risk worth taking, as the rewards could have been huge and to be honest, I still think we can shift him for £12mil, so not too great a loss. It was a last minute signing having failed to land Falcao or Cavani, so it was a case of "punt on balotelli, or nothing".
Emre Can - 7 - Good price for solid german/turkish engineering. Could have a bright future, or even just become a reliable backup much like Lucas.

 

This is the thing - whilst most will look at the recruitment and say we signed poor players, the manager has a responsibility to develop these players and get the best out of them.

As I've mentioned before, the best managers get the most out of their resources.

Rodgers has managed to get both the very best and worst out his resources. Half of me wants to stick with it as very few can get sides working like he can on our good runs (which were fundamentally different in formation and tactics). The other half sees what happens when he gets it wrong and wants more stability.

 

Bren is a genius.

He made 3 at the back work when van gaal made it look stupid.
