A victim of one of Britain’s most prolific *****philes has called Celtic FC’s failure to take responsibility for widespread abuse at its feeder club a “kick in the teeth” for those who were targeted.

Steve Walters, 47, helped to set up the Offside Trust, a charity for survivors of abuse at football clubs, after being sexually assaulted by Barry Bennell while playing for Crewe Alexandra in the 1980s.

He has accused the Parkhead club of burying its head in the sand and urged it to apologise for the abuse suffered by members of the Celtic Boys Club.

The Times disclosed yesterday that the Scottish and English FAs are investigating a “partnership” between Jim McCafferty, a former Celtic kitman and boys coach, and Bennell, 65, who worked with young players at Manchester City and Crewe.

McCafferty, 73, was jailed last week for abusing boys over a 24-year period, while Bennell is serving a 30-year sentence for offences against youngsters on an “industrial scale” in England. McCafferty was the fourth man with connections to Celtic Boys Club to be convicted for abusing children in recent months.
Celtic has expressed sympathy for the victims but insists the boys’ club is separate and not its responsibility.

Mr Walters described the club’s stance as deeply disappointing. “Celtic appear to be taking advice from their lawyers and keeping quiet,” he said.
“It’s a kick in the teeth for the people who suffered dreadful abuse. They are burying their head in the sand, but it doesn’t have to be like that.” He said Manchester City had issued a public apology and begun a “survivors’ scheme” to provide compensation to victims of Bennell.

Mr Walters said: “My message to Celtic would be ‘it’s not too late to do the right thing’. They need to step up and show some responsibility and accountability. An acknowledgement and an apology would be a good start.”

A source close to the Independent Review of Sexual Abuse in Scottish Football said there would be full disclosure in relation to criminality and co-operation involving Bennell and McCafferty. The Times understands that its final report will contain evidence that McCafferty took youngsters from Glasgow to tournaments in northwest England where they were introduced to Bennell.

Thompsons Solicitors believes that McCafferty was part of a UK-wide football *****phile ring involving Bennell and others. Patrick McGuire, a partner with the firm, said: “Previously Celtic have peddled the line that there is no connection between Celtic FC and Celtic Boys Club. Since McCafferty’s most recent conviction there has been utter silence from the club.

“I take it, on one level, to be a positive sign that perhaps they have taken a long hard look at themselves and realised that line no longer washes. However, it is nowhere near as good as a formal response which recognises the wrongs that were done in their name.”

Yesterday a former Celtic Boys Club manager jailed for abusing young footballers lost a bid to be released on bail while appealing against his conviction. Frank Cairney, 83, was sentenced to four years in prison in February on nine charges dating back to the 1980s. He had asked for bail on health grounds but the request was turned down by a judge at the Appeal Court in Edinburgh.

Celtic did not respond to a request for comment.
