Fairly confident I just saw Wigan's Ben Jones try a Le Tiss style flick up free kick. Someone should have a word.
He didnt look like a 12m player today! Guess he wasnt really up for it what with the bereavement and all... Has he got a shot on him? He is a great player but just seems so reluctant to shoot (as does Jrod).
Didn't think he was all flair and out-and-out attack, but covered Shaw well, got stuck in and fought for the ball. Wasn't a passenger.
Do you mean David Jones? If so:
Saw that and thought how like Tiss's goal it was....just do it all the time, lad, and you'll be fit to lace Matty's boots.
The thing that struck me, Chilco, was Alan Shearer's comment, later on in the evening on MOTD. Lineker had just set him up nicely be saying that his former club... have been playing some excellent football at times, to which he agreed we had been playing some good football and had just done enough to win..! Now I call that bloody half-hearted as a review. We'd actually bloody well dominated the match and all I'd see was that we'd have the ball for ages, then Reading would get it off us, as an attack broke down [the Reading defence was well ordered], and then we'd very quickly win it back off them and keep it again for a good while. And so the match progressed in that fashion. All the stats show domination, and the only one that actually lied was the score. That was certainly more like a 3 or 4-1 [it was definitely 2-0, except for the referee's decision, with a faint possibility of a Reading penalty]. Yes, he did mention what he liked about Saints. But that was stating the obvious. We can score goals from almost anywhere. I do get the feeling form Shearer that he's not at all proud of having played for SFC at times, despite the almost unanimous good cheer he gets from Saints fans.
I don't think it's that, I think it's more the fact he's not a very good pundit. I do like the fella though.
In the Mail, it said Puncheon scored 2 perfectly good goals...so they do get it right sometimes. They lost my goodwill when their summary said we'd have to play better to avoid being pulled back into the mire, though they added that at least we were up for the fight.
Shearer is an awful pundit. Like when he said along the lines of "Southampton don't really keep clean sheets, except recently when they have". Umm.... absolute abomination of a pundit. Clear the old boys club out I say, although I don't mind Lineker.
DTLW - would be too expensive to clear the "Ol'boys Network" out of MotD bearing in mind GL is on £1m pa, Hanson is on £500k pa and the rest on equally fat salaries for making uninformed comments on the "LITTLE CLUBS" based on watching five minutes of highlights in the editors studio
Gary Neville is a better analyzer, but MOTD is more about sound bites than analysis if the game isn't one of the first few aired. Sky do this better, but they have hours to fill...you can't expect anything in depth from a short programme.
I think the problem with MOTD is that once the main game is chosen, all the pundits' energy and what brain power they have goes into finding sound bites for that game. When Saints have been the main game (which to be fair they often have been this season) they have made some reasonable comments (apart from the usual stuff about Rickie being a Grant Holt type player etc.). This weekend they had a couple of cracking goal-filled thrillers to enthuse about before they got on to Saints v Reading, and they'd had enough by then, especially Shearer.
