Page - do you think it's racism or just elitism? I say that only because I still believe it is hard for someone who is British and white who doesn't have the "right" background (schhooling etc) to get into the upper echelons. Obviously you could argue that it puts minorities at a disadvantage as so few of them would possess the required background so you might respond to the original question as "it's a combination of both".

Great point Dan.<ok>

Its a bit of both I'd say mate, the old school elitist trait is clearly prevalent in Cameron's cabinet, its packed with his old Etonian chums.

It's a lazy conclusion to point at the lack of black faces in certain high profile positions and declare that it's definitive proof of institutional racism.

But in at least two of jb's examples you have to start at the bottom and work your way through stages to reach the pinnacle, so if you face underhand racism further down the chain you're destined to never reach the top.

There's also the funny handshake brigade standing in your way.

My point is not that there's some racism at play, merely that it's stemming from individuals who happen to be in the positions that have influence over recruitment / promotion (at whatever point in the chain) as opposed to being an institutional 'shut out'.

As I said earlier time will wash out those closet racists, and the issue will resolve itself. How many Afro Caribbean men were applying to the Police force back in the 70's / 80's? Not many would be my guess. Recent years that's changed and there'll be a gradual organic increase in the number who climb the ladder.

Benedict Cumberbatch has apologised after referring to black actors as “coloured”during an interview on US television, saying he is “devastated” to have caused offence.

The Sherlock actor said he was “an idiot” after he used the phrase during a debate, ironically about the diversity problems that black British actors face in the UK compared to the US, which he argued has been more open to casting them.

Talking on the Tavis Smiley show on PBS, Cumberbatch said: “I think as far as coloured actors go, it gets really different in the UK, and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in America] than in the UK, and that’s something that needs to change.”

Reaction was mixed after the actor – who has been nominated for an Oscar for his role in The Imitation Game – used the outdated term, with many praising the sentiment of his argument but lamenting his poor choice of words.

A spokesperson for the anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card, told the Independent: “Benedict Cumberbatch has highlighted a very important issue within the entertainment industry and within society. In doing so, he has also inadvertently highlighted the issue of appropriate terminology and the evolution of language.”

They added that the organisation feels the term “has the potential to cause offence due to the connotations associated with the term and its historical usage”.

In a statement Cumberbatch said: “I’m devastated to have caused offence by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done.”

I think the fact that someone notices it and points it out is a racist act. It's suggesting there is a 'us vs them' type mentality <doh>

You expect comedians to be controversial though. Who takes what they say seriously? Whoever does seriously need to get a life lol

Nobody takes them seriously, you can only ever take offence....never give it

Its only ever one way too like If I called someone a black **** Id be lambasted for It but anyone ever seen a black guy get stick for calling us white ****?

Nope? surely that's because black people don't call us that do they lol<doh>

The laws relating to hate crime/racism would see the person who called you a "white ****" charged with the offence if you could prove it was said and was meant to cause offence.

Personally I prefer to call you a blue ****, it has a much better ring to it.

I am called a white honkey by our mainly minority workforce due to being outnumbered in my chosen field of engineering by the population minority. Could I have them charged?

Lets be fair, this is not only in the offices but also the production area. Or maybe I should just man up and not get all PC as i may be persicuted by my mainly minority upper management

You must have missed Diane Abbott's tweet - ''white people love playing 'divide & rule'. We should not play their game" - where she was accused of racism and forced to apologise.

I like the part about being 'forced' to apologise.
