Like "Till Death Us Do Part", "Love Thy Neighbour" was misunderstood by many.
It was a satire on the entrenched prejudices shown at the time by many white British people simply unused to the burgeoning multi-ethnicity of the period. The main (white) male character was a bigot, who couldn't cope with the black family moving in next door. In contrast, the black family were urbane, intelligent and more sophisticated. The white guy was made to look a fool in every episode, and the show was meant to highlight and mock unfounded racial prejudices, not reinforce them.
Unfortunately, an awful lot of people just don't get satire , and some take the show on face value, and think it advocates racial stereotypes, when it was actually mocking them.
It did use language (from both sides) that would be entirely unacceptable today, and so would make uncomfortable viewing now. It was a little bit heavy handed- but it was intended to challenge preconceptions, not promote them.
