I vaguely remember it and in the other show you mentioned, I always wondered what Alf Garnett meant by 'scaarr..s git' - it was ages before I cottoned on it was 'scouse' referring to his son in law [Cherie Blair's Dad btw ] <yikes> I'm a bit better at understanding accents now <laugh>

Saint was correct about the satire and the show was all about "whitey" being thick as an Eskimos coat while the black couple were very nice and very tolerant of their racist neighbour.

But at the same time The Comedian's was a hit and that was just plain mockery of blacks(and others)and nasty with it.

If Bernard Manning was still alive and doing his thing Manchester would be up to its neck in racial problems because his main targets were from Muslim countries.

Like "Till Death Us Do Part", "Love Thy Neighbour" was misunderstood by many.
It was a satire on the entrenched prejudices shown at the time by many white British people simply unused to the burgeoning multi-ethnicity of the period. The main (white) male character was a bigot, who couldn't cope with the black family moving in next door. In contrast, the black family were urbane, intelligent and more sophisticated. The white guy was made to look a fool in every episode, and the show was meant to highlight and mock unfounded racial prejudices, not reinforce them.
Unfortunately, an awful lot of people just don't get satire , and some take the show on face value, and think it advocates racial stereotypes, when it was actually mocking them.
It did use language (from both sides) that would be entirely unacceptable today, and so would make uncomfortable viewing now. It was a little bit heavy handed- but it was intended to challenge preconceptions, not promote them.

Unerringly, this ^ <ok>

Racist...

Did you know that Jan Molby never passed to El Hadji Diouf? shocking<ok>

....and why's that then?

Could it be because the institutional racism that you mention is more prevalent in Ireland than it is in the vastly more culturally diverse UK?

Not sure that just because we have a larger diversity that we should have people from these ethnic backgrounds in certain roles. If they are not up to the job then should they just be employed to fill a quota?

The point is many are "up to the job" but get overlooked
whooosh...

As it goes over your head<laugh>

Thought we were talking about racism, why bring Everton's route one tactic into it.<whistle>

Nothing wrong with Chubby Brown, he tells it like it is. Same goes for Frankie Boyle.
