The battle of the slow horses apparently, probably the deepest Racing Post field ive seen in my short career, 20/1 about Fantastic Moon looks too big, as does the 9/2 Trading Leather and the 3/1 Battle Of Marengo.

So whos the fastest of these slow horses?

Im on, Trading Leather 9/2, took the plunge, colours nailed to the mast, already on for the Derby at 25s so sticking with him, I think he will improve past Battle Of Marengo and I think the others have a bit to find with these two. The forecast is for it to be dry until the race so maybe only be good to soft if the rain stays away and that will be fine for the Bolger Derby horse. He does have the best 2yo around in Dawn Approach so he has a good line and he thinks alot of this horse.
 
The fact Steeler is an 11/2 chance in this field says a lot about the star quality- none.


If any of these go on to make a Derby winner I'll stand shagging.


Not a race I'd be getting interested in really.


Think there will be a number of 3 year olds better than this lot next year.
 
Steeler gets alot of undeserved stick for me, he clocked 1.35.67 in the Royal Lodge so he isnt as slow as he looks, his form with Dundonnel ties in close with Toronado, Artigiano who he beat at Newmarket wasnt far behind Dawn Approach in the Coventry and has close form with Olympic Glory. He isnt flashy but hes a very tough horse and he arguably brings the strongest form to the table.
 
I like the look of First Cornerstone who beat a horse that I understand is held in very high regard LTO. That O'Brien horse was disappointing next time out when seemingly attempting to run the legs off of Dawn Approach however I heard a few whispers that the plan was to go off not quite that quick and never get caught. Not by Dawn Approach but more interestingly not by Nevis either despite the price and despite the jockey booking. In fact I'm a little surprised not to see him running in this very race. I don't for a minute believe he is behind all of the Coolmore runners and I think that makes First Cornerstone very interesting.

I'm not one to take two against the field but Van De Neer is very interesting for a number of reasons. He beat a horse held in high regard and beat him well LTO. He has been supplemented at great cost and it looks as if Hughes has opted for this ride (assuming Havana Gold isn't due to be scratched). Given the horse's lack of experience they must like this one a lot and in a field seemingly lacking quality it might pay to be with an unexposed type.
 
Lacking in quality this, slow horses that.

If theres been a stronger 2yo race run this season I havent seen it.

Obviously in David Redvers land the Mill Reef was the best 2yo form of all time, but apart from that.

Van Der Neer isnt even in the top 5 at Hannons, I assume you mean hes the only danger to Kingsbarns for 4rth place, because thats what they will be fighting out.

If Van Der Neer was a Racing Post horse what on earth was he doing running in an egg and spoon race at Leicester a week ago? He has an absolute mountain to climb on form and he hasnt a hope of getting home with the main players here, its nice to have him in the race on paper but that is all, I dont consider him in any way a serious contender to win seeing as he wont even stay a mile next year never mind just now against 3 of the strongest 2yo middle distance types seen this season.

Well, the bookies agreed with me, I still dont think the horse is ready and I think the decision is purely down to the ground, 6/1 was short, the opening 8/1 was the right price and anyone backing him at the current odds ought to chuck it. It looks a very very dodgy race the more I look at it, you couldnt be confident about anything winning. I will stick to my guns though as I always do, I think it will be a battle and I think the form horses will fight it out.

nahh being serious now this is a 100% no bet race for me couldn't touch Kingsbarns at that sort of price but seems I will be right about Joseph riding this one. I do think Van Der Neer is a decent horse but has it all to do on form. I think Kingsbarns wins mind but he is an awful 2/1 shot.
 
Battle Of Marengo dosent run, so there wasnt a decision to make <laugh>

I agree RV, i really liked the way this horse went about it's buisness on debut and by all accounts is a horse the yard are very much looking forward to having a bright future with. Hopefully Kingsbarns can put up a bold show but again it doesn't look to be the best race on paper so it would want to be up there.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ballydoyle have pulled a bit of a fast one with the Racing Post Trophy. They had six in the race, there was a big punt on one horse and then the other five are withdrawn leaving it as favourite and the bookies facing a big payout. Interesting that Ladbrokes did not have any ante post prices on the race &#8211; what did Mike Dillon know that everybody else did not?

I like Trading Leather myself. It is hard to tell whether the Autumn Stakes was a good field or not because most of them had potential rather than actual form. The form pick is arguably Steeler but how often is a Richard Hannon two-year-old (Van Der Neer) not in the first two in the betting.
