Best dog I ever had was a GSD.

She died 25 years ago. I still miss her. Irreplaceable.

    RIP Max.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you get over it quicker than me. I took my cat in for a check up on Christmas Eve and had to have her put down. What I find most upsetting is the fact she hid her illnesses as cats do but must have suffered in silence. It totally ruined my Christmas. Sure, there are more important things in life to worry about but as mentioned in a previous post they become part of the family.

During our 36 years together, the "Child-Bride" and I have lost a White Chinchilla Cat (14 years - the CB was Heart Broken for weeks) and 3 Dalmatians (the loveliest of dogs - again heartbroken with the passing of each one) we replaced the Chinchilla with two Birman's (brother and sister recklings from the same litter) we lost Herman (yes, Herman the Birman) 2 months ago at age 14 years and the other has been pining something terrible. She is terribly aggressive to other cats that stray into our back area but our sister-in-law runs a Pet Shop and has a kitten in need of a home so we are going to try and introduce it very slowly over the next few weeks but it will be a long haul. Like you say, they become part of the family and there is nothing more scary than to realize that you have been trained by a cat to feed it when required, to let it out when it sits by the door and to let it back in when it demands.
    Sympathies Baldrick.

Condolences Baldrick, always a big loss. We had a cat many years ago (Wagstaff) and a cross-terrier (Luigi - after Luigi Riva). We used to feed 'em pretty much at the same time, their bowls were next to each other. In typical fashion, for him anyway, the cat never finished his meal in one go - leaving a bit for later on. The dog got wise to this and often scoffed the cat's leftovers when Waggy sauntered out of eyesight. One day, the dog stopped nicking the cat's leftovers, so we thought the dog might be sick and took him to the vet for a check-up. He got the all clear. About a couple of weeks later, the cat passed away. When we took the ailing cat to the vets, she told us that the dog had probably sensed the cat was sick and changed it's behaviour (not nicking the cat's food) in sympathy for the cat. A sixth sense I suppose. Still miss 'em both, and it's been 25 years.
