George Eastham, a member of England's 1966 World Cup winning squad, has died at the age of 88.

The Blackpool-born winger did not play in his country's only major tournament win but he was a part of Sir Alf Ramsey's squad which triumphed on home soil 58 years ago.

Eastham spent the majority of his career at Newcastle, Arsenal and Stoke City. He had a far-reaching impact off the field, helping to improve players' freedom to move between clubs during a landmark 1963 court case which he was involved in.
 
22 years ago today the punk rock world mourned the passing of John Graham Mellor AKA Joe Strummer.

I saw him earlier that year at Lancashire Cricket Ground. He was still on top of his game. A big shock. Time flies too quickly. RIP
 
Fireman Sam star David Carling has tragically passed away aged 55.

The actor, who voiced Station Officer Steele in the iconic series since 2008, died December 10. No cause of death has been given.

A source confirmed to The Sun: 'David died earlier this month. It's terrible news and very sad for everyone who knew him. He was lovely to work with and a true professional.'

Former snooker star Silvino Francisco – who won the 1985 British Open – has died aged 78.

The South African reached a career-high rank of No 10 and is the only player born in Africa to win a snooker ranking event.

Francisco passed away on December 14, with the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) confirming the news on Saturday.

'WST (World Snooker Tour) and WPBSA extend our sincere condolences to Silvino's wife June and all of his family and friends,' a statement read.

His British Open final victory over Kirk Stevens, aired on ITV, saw 15.5million fans tune in and earned him a then record-breaking prize of £50,000.

'The Silver Fish' enjoyed a long and illustrious career in the game, playing at the World Championship at the Crucible for eight successive years from 1982 and recording memorable wins over the likes of Jimmy White and Alex Higgins.
