"When the dog left a message on the step ******* Lester Piggott when he lost it by a neck" Name of band and song title.
One of the favourites, his trainer prayed for rain, believing he could not lose the Epsom Derby on soft ground (he would remain unbeaten in his career on such going). The rain never came and the going was âhard.â His stable mate also ran in the race after running down the field in the 2000 Guineas and then competing over ten and a half furlongs in France- Lester Piggott rode him and reported the horse did not stay and had no chance in the Derby. His owner wanted to run him but sincerely believed he wouldnât finish in the first ten. He won the race and his stable mate finished fourth. Five years later he sired a dual Classic winner and was Champion British sire that year. Name the two horses.
Tamerlo, I think it was the 1961 winner Psidium, and the 4th home was Sovrango? Here's an old video clip of that shock 66-1 winner. http://www.britishpathe.com/video/the-derby-1961 (You won't believe this but my kid brother backed the winner at 66-1, then had all hell getting his money from the Scottish bookmaker (remember the old postal bets, legal in Scotland?) who said that the Kingston-on-Thames postmark was blurred. My brother battled on and in the end they paid him out in full! Remember him writing to me about it).
Spot on, Swannie! Well done!! I don't think Psidium ever ran again but Sovrango certainly did- and was stones better on testing ground.
