Match Preview;
This weekend we welcome Sheffield United to Loftus Road for a 3pm kick off on Saturday afternoon...as football should be. Sheffield United lost last night, 1-2 to Coventry, and have won three and lost two in their last five. Their top scorers are Callum O'Hare and Patrick Bamford with 8 goals each. Their manager, Chris Wilde, started his third spell in charge at Brammall Lane in October 2025, having previously managed them for five years from 2016, then another two years from 2025. Then, weirdly, having lost the playoff final to Sunderland, his contract was terminated in June 2025 and they appointed Reubén Sellés, who managed 6, and lost 6...and so they sacked him and re-approinted Chris Wilde in October. It's a strange sport at times isn't it!

As for us, I have a vague recollection that we played mid week and got spanked by Southampton, but I've blanked it out as best I can. That loss means we've won two, lost two and drawn one in our last five. The many things that went wrong on Tuesday night can be read about on that match day thread, but Julien Stefan has said we need to 'reset quickly' to be ready for Saturday. Not quite sure how he can do that, other than giving the players a rollicking, or with wholesale changes to the starting 11.

Maybe. More chance of doing so than if we’d lost a forgettable game by a couple of goals. Also we’re routinely told that playing with a day less to recover is basically impossible so Sheffield United will surely turn up and play like we did at Norwich. Some of their players might even forget how to use their limbs entirely.

Sounds like they played quite well last night. Very good side on paper and in pretty healthy form since the clown they started the season with got the boot.
 
Any news on how long Madsen is out for?

Don't think i can bring myself to watch this on saturday with a midfield consisting of any combo of Varane/Hayden/Morgan/Saito.

Is Smyth at least expected back yet?
 
Forgot RND can’t play. We might get Stroller’s 5-3-2 wish. Maybe JCS at left-back. Maybe Roberto Carlos given a shot at defending against their very quick and attacking right side. Excited to find out.

I would prefer a 4-4-2 to start and if we are on top switch to 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 to keep pressure on Sheff Utd. We really do need to get back to basics and shore up the defence. It's no coincidence that when JS has dropped Cook, we've looked weak at the back.

Still think it’s more a midfield issue than in defence. We got away with it at Hull because their midfield was even worse with and without the ball but it’s asking a lot of one even good division two DM against the quality and formation Soton have. Hayden wasn’t up to it and he won’t be up to it against Hamer, O’Hare and Brooks and now without Madsen to both help defensively a bit and progress the ball when we do have it. Saito and Vale being, on a good day, mediocre defensively makes it a kamikaze mission.

I like 4-4-2 when we have the players available for it. For this I think he’s asking for a lot of trouble if it’s not Hayden, Varane and Morgan/Vale in the middle.

Assuming RHD, Madsen and Smyth are unavailable I would suggest trying a change in the formation?
