Match Preview;
On Saturday we face one of only two clubs below us, after our nose dive in form and table position over the last five games. We've picked up two points from our last five, Portsmouth have lost four and drawn five so far this season...they are the only team in the division yet to record a league win. This is their first season back in the Championship after seven season in League One, and before that they spent four seasons in League Two, after three relegations in four seasons, from 2009/10 to 2012/13. After falling so far down the ranks, it is good to see them back.
I have mixed memories of Portsmouth, as on the one hand I remember them being a little club in the Premier League, and I always enjoy seeing small clubs against the so called giants of English football. I also remember sitting in Ellerslie Road and watching the South Africa Road stand divide as a group of Pompey fans had got in and trouble started. If I remember correctly the game was delayed for a while...would that have been in 1997? Others can fill in the details if they remember. Anyway, no matter what happened nearly thirty years ago, it is good to see them back, and I wish them well, other than this Saturday.
As for us, we can only hope miracles were worked during the international break, and we can start seeing the best from a group of players who don't seem to have clicked so far this season. Celer arrived with much promise, but is yet to hit the back of the net, and others have not stepped up with goals. I can only hope the international break has been spent working on set pieces, and more direct attacking play so we begin to get some more shots on target, and don't lose the ball before having a chance to score.
Frey's pre-match comments;
"We understand the situation we are in - but I see a team that has worked really hard over the last two weeks to put things right.
"We now enter the final preparations for Saturday and I know that we will give everything we can to win this game, like always.
"Things can change very quickly in football and we have to turn the tide now, bring back the positivity and really force our own luck. We have to work very hard in every action we take.
"I see determination in every player to put things right. The intensity is high and we are all pushing each other.
"In football, you live game-by-game, but we know that it is a long season. There are a lot of chances to take points still and it's on us to decide what is going to happen this year."
