I thought I was one of the older posters but I have no recollection of hearing Dave Sexton speak about the team or a particular performance. With the benefit of hindsight I think he was overrated. He did not put together the team that almost won the title, that was down to his predecessor, Gordon Jago as with the greatest will in the world the success that year was not down solely to the acquisition of Dave Webb. Apart from that it was the same team that got us promoted a couple of years before.

He then left after a disappointing follow up season because United came a-calling but failed in 4 years to win the title for them in spite of the untold riches at his disposal. Don't get me wrong. I liked him and the football his teams played but not in my list of top managers.

To be fair Sexton signed Don Masson only two months after he became manager, and I think Masson was the final piece in the jigsaw, or at least a more than decent replacement for the creativity of Terry Venables.
