The Blues manager avoided an early exit thanks to a Didier Drogba-inspired 3-0 win over the Spaniards.

The 33-year-old broke the deadlock with a third-minute drive and, after Ramires prodded home at second, secured victory by neatly flicking in a Juan Mata through-ball in the second half.

Victory confirms progression to the knockout stage as Group E winners, which Villas-Boas hopes will quieten the naysayers.

"It helps to score straight away in the game," Villas-Boas said. "It gave the team the right emotional stance for the rest of the game and gave a full boost in confidence.

"To get the second not long afterwards made the team even more confident on what was happening.

"In terms of the result and what happens in us finishing top, it's fantastic. It's against all odds.

"Nobody, or anybody here, would have bet on us finishing top, but it's happened and it is very, very gratifying for the team.

"The team were excellent. It is a win of human values, of team spirit, solidarity, responsibility, strength of character, ability to take criticism, resilience, and this is a great win for Chelsea players.

"They deserve a respect that they don't get.

"We've been continually chased by different kinds of people, but today we've given everybody (those critics) a slap in the face."

Villas-Boas has seen his squad selection, philosophy and position come under increasing scrutiny recently.

The Portuguese manager believes the column inches dedicated to Chelsea is part of a wider "persecution" and called it "out of this world".

Asked whether he detected anger among players, Villas-Boas retorted: "No, I just think the reaction has been over the top.

"There's only one team in the country at the moment, and that's Man City.

"I sincerely hope they qualify, but the approach to them is if they qualify they qualify, and if they don't they don't.

"We don't get that margin from you guys. That's not the same as with us. I will never criticise your editorial choices, but it is the reality.

"People take perspectives that are out of this world, from criticising our players to criticising choices.

"We see a Manchester United defender (Gary Neville) today say in the preparations for the game and says things like 'I don't want to be one of the Chelsea players today', 'I couldn't play this game' and 'It is a difficult game for them'.

"This is out of this world for me, I don't believe this.

"It continues the persecution of Chelsea, continues aggression to one club.

"We have become your target, we have to accept it. Tomorrow, it's unfortunate for you guys because you'll have to report on a brilliant win for Chelsea and finishing first.

"Tomorrow is difficult for you guys. I'll never pick a fight with you guys."

While relieved to secure victory and stem the tide of negativity, Villas-Boas had to sacrifice his ideals for a place in the Champions League knockout phase.

Chelsea defended uncharacteristically deeply and invited the Spanish side on, hoping to grab goals on the counter-attack.

"I think there is a phrase that is interesting: the person that you are is a triumph in the person you want to be," Villas-Boas added.

"Today it was a win of personal values and human values.

"I think in the way we set out our philosophy, there are human values that you cannot put away.

"Today they showed themselves to an unbelievable expression.

"Yes, I think it is a different strategy, but the same philosophy in human values."

Counterpart Unai Emery was far more straightforward in his assessment of the game, admitting Valencia lost to a better side.

Los Che's defeat at Stamford Bridge also saw them end Group E in third place, which drops them into the Europa League.

"Apart from today, you could say we lost two valuable points at Genk," Emery said.

"But we mustn't really look back at where we lost, we must focus on the right way to do things.

"We have seen Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen deservedly qualify, with Chelsea proving very strong.

"But we must look ahead to the Europa League, where we can have a high objectives, and to the next league game against Betis."

So kc"spurs" the last time you were on our board I invited you to lol at Chelsea with me. Come on no self-respecting Spurs fan could turn that down surely? You're 3 points ahead of them, with a game in hand; add that to the 6 points you'll get off them when you play. I know it may not have been funny for you seeing your rivals humiliate them 5(FIVE)-3 the other week but we enjoyed it here in these parts.Discuss.

i have to sort of agree with this. neil has come out and said he's been training well and trained on his day off. why bother if it's already a done deal for him not to play again and leave in jan??

As already mentioned,Im not sure hes the full ticket and could be a bit 'simple'..Although Im sure hes offski, noone on here can tell me that they wouldnt love to see him 'meg' John Terry or Vidic and curl a beauty in from 25 yards...just for safe keeping??...

Do you know what? I'm actually starting to doubt that kc"spurs"is a Spurs fan. Mmm disappointing to say the least. I mean if you can't trust people, you've never met, on this interweb thingy who can you trust?

Anyway I have to go. I'm in correspondence with a soldier in Libya who's just found all of Gadaffi's hidden gold. All he needs is my bank details so he can move it legitimately out of the country and it's a 50/50 split.

Listen, COLIN has been an absolute Saint putting up with this little punk (just shows how much hes mellowed cos a few yrs ago he would have choked him). Hes had enough of his antics and it will take a lot more than hard training (finally) to get back in the side. I hope he never lets him back in because hes a disgrace to the shirt and professional footballers in general.

i agree that he's been lazy, petulant, disloyal etc, etc, all i'm saying is, why bother trying hard for us now if it's already decided by both parties that he's moving on? i don't see the point?

Never forget lads, we would NEVER be in the current position we are without him. I'll remember him fondly, has exceptional ability but his attitude does need to change. Will be a sad day when he eventually does go, and it's a creative loss to our side.

Many a talented footballer has not been blessed with many brain cells. I'm not convinced he's a "******" as some are suggesting, but I do think that he's not the brightest star in the galaxy in the same way that Gasgoine, Best and even our beloved Stan weren't!! (I'm sure there are many more too....Rooney is another).
I acknowledge that his attitude is very hard to tolerate and that his advisers are probably as much to blame as his lack of intellect!! However, I simply can't understand why some on here vilify him so much. Have a look back at the highlights of last season and remember just what he did for us. I, for one, will always remember the fantastic memories he has given me and my two sons and will always remember him very fondly. Also, as is often said, we would simply still be in the Championship now and probably stuck with Bernie etc. if it wasn't for Adel!
Finally, it is sad that NW appears to have lost patience with him, but I understand why. I do fear that we will have zero creativity when he leaves and I am already looking at the league table thinking that we are not very far away from being deep, deep in the ****. Hopefully, January will bring some good news for us all, although it is a notoriously difficult time to get quality players.
I said a while ago that we had probably seen him for the last time and Jones seems to confirm that.
I for one will only have fond memories of Adel and will always be grateful that I was lucky enough to watch him play for us!!

Are you b******s a Spurs fan.

Registered over two weeks and 14 posts all on our forum. As Northolt asked you when you first surfaced why aren't you posting on the Spurs section. Answer is you're "ranger"77 with the same MO and agenda as before. Throw in a couple of posts about Taarabt and/or Warnock and see what s**t you can stir.

You are a Chelsea wummer and an idiot with pretensions of being an internet "character" which makes you a plum twice over in my book.

As a Spurs "fan" who hasn't yet posted on the Spurs thread how about this to help you, ahem, break your cherry.

    <laugh>

Why don't you and I go on the Spurs board and lol at Chelsea together as you don't seem too keen to do it here? I had a quick browse on there earlier and OMG they despise Chelsea almost (almost but not quite) as much as I do. But hey the whole world's against Chelsea right?

As a, no-doubt, dyed-in-the-wool Spurs fan like yourself would obviously appreciate, there are countless threads on there disparaging our noisy neighbours.

Take this for example in thread entitled "You must be joking LOL. Using Fat Frank as bait!!!!"" The first line: " Frank Lampard may be used as a shock makeweight in a deal to lure Spurs star Luka Modric to Chelsea."

Now there's an open goal if I ever saw one. Let's just hope £50m flop Torres isn't there to put it into row Z LOL.
