Belgium,,,1-0...Canada......the goal came against the run of play......they looked shell shocked at the way Canada took the game to them and just couldn't cope until they scored.

Brazil...2-0...Serbia....once they scored they looked good.....Richarlison's second outstanding.

So much extra time at the end of some of these matches.......Wycombe Wanderers must be so envious.

Wales...0-2...Iran.....best team won.......How Hennessey wasn't sent off immediately is weird.....his boot missed the Iranian players face by inches....besides him being smashed to the ground.

I’ve been watching a lot of this but not all by any means.

    I can’t say I’ve been overly impressed.

Some of the refereeing has been bizarre. Where are all the European referees?

Few teams have impressed me and the ones that have aren’t the ones you’d expect. A lot seem to be playing like headless chickens: all action but no structure or tactics. You have to admire Japan. Morocco and Iran instead.

The one “big” team that have impressed is England, who played good stuff against what’s turned out to be a surprisingly good Iranian team, who in turn looked much better than Wales in Round 2. Then there was the Game against the USA though… which England will turn up for the rest of the competition?

Interesting article in the Times over the weekend about the behind-closed-doors “diplomacy” that’s been going on behind the scenes. The headline referred to a “magnet for deals”. The US Secretary of State and members of Congress have been in evidence, I seem to remember our own Foreign Secretary has been there as have Ivanka Trump and her husband, often an envoy for Trump himself. A deal has been struck between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, who’ve been at loggerheads for years over Qatar’s support for some shady Muslim fringe group which is disliked by the Saudis.

Money makes the world go round…..

Utterly farcical handball penalty in the Brazil-Uruguay match… instigated by VAR.. scrap it now if that’s what it comes up with.

Have you been drinking notdistant? It was Portugal. That was always going to be given even if it is farcical. The ball is stopped going on it's merry way by a hand in the box so ergo it's a VAR penalty these days. I think it's stupid as well but they won't change now. Just glad Ronaldo had been subbed and couldn't try to claim that one as well. He really is a nob end isn't he.
