And yet the most common result during world cups and Euro championships is 1-0, so low scoring games shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Also didn't Weah score for the USA to put them ahead of Wales, before the Welsh equalised with their 82nd minute penalty :emoticon-0138-think
So you were saying about low scores? England? Portugal? Spain? France?

Given Wakeys comment earlier regarding the apparent lack of goals scored at this world cup (or more correctly the lack of hammerings that the smaller nations have had) and my reply of it not being a surprised due to the most common result in a world cup finals game being 1-0, me being me, then of course has to go and do some comparisons to see if this is a low scoring tournament or not (and just to clarify I too felt it was a low scoring tournament)

Average amount of goals scored in the previous 6 world cups after 16 games played - 37.5 or 2.3 goals per game

Only 13 games had been played when Wakey posted, so that equalled 34 goals or 2.61 goals per game. With the final 3 games played the average goals per game has dropped to 2.56

After completion of the first round of games with Brazil tonight, this tournament has the 2nd highest amount of goals scored in the first 16 games, 5 goals behind the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and 15 more than at South Africa in 2010, where the most goals scored in a match was 4

2022 Qatar - first 16 games produced 41 goals, including Spain winning 7-0 and England winning 6-2

2018 Russia - first 16 games produced 38 goals, highest scoring games Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia and Spain 3-3 Portugal

2014 Brazil - first 16 games produced 46 goals, highest scoring games Spain 1-5 Netherlands and Germany 4-0 Portugal

2010 South Africa- first 16 games produced 26 goals, highest scoring game Germany beating Australia 4-0

2006 Germany - first 16 games produced 39 goals, highest scoring game Germany 4 - 2 Costa Rica

2002 Japan/S Korea- first 16 games produced 39 goals, highest scoring game Germany 8 - 0 Saudi Arabia

1998 France - first 16 games produced 37 goals, highest scoring game Spain 2-3 Nigeria
