Said on Sky that the PL will be pleased as it won't affect the Boxing Day matches. So two weeks after the final every player involved will have had a rest, yet strangely be match fit. Won't affect England of course...our players will have about a month's rest.

We will surely have to drop one of the cups, obviously the League Cup, for that season. I can't see how else we will fit in a whole Premier League season with a month-sized hole in the middle.

Don't forget the preparation too, so that's 2-4 weeks surely.

It is likely that it won't be just one season banjaxed...there will have to be adjustments elsewhere.

Even worse for some of our European cousins who traditionally have a break in Late December/January. So will have to break the season for three months.

It's going to be difficult for us to win our third champions league crown in a row that season too.
Six champions league matches in September/October won't work.

I say that to myself every time. Never works. Mind you, I say that about Wimbledon too, and I don't watch that anymore. Maybe by December 2022 I'll listen to myself about World Cup football.

Usually like the World Cup, but am still pissed off how our defectors ruined it for me. All my joy about 'our boys' going was ruined.

They keep talking about how many games are going to need moving during the tournament, but it isn't as simple as that. Players can't play right up to the Cup, then resume playing right afterwards. Players from countries doing well (not England, obviously :)) will need a break afterwards. Managers will have players coming back in dribs and drabs and be trying to knock them into shape for the PL.

The League Cup will probably be dropped, but wrong to drop the FA Cup...that can be a nice earner for the lower clubs. I suppose there will have to be a knockout tournament for clubs below the Championship and have the PL and Championship clubs join later in the tournament than usual.

This will be similar to that terrible winter (1961/2?) when no football was played for about the same period....at least this time there will be warning. Teams had to play a lot of consecutive games then...of course this was before professional footballers became delicate.

It was 1962-63, but your point is absolutely taken.

Sadly I think we will never see FA Cup replays again after this tournament and that may also be the beginning of a Winter break as well :(

The Winter break could benefit a club like Saints. The last two seasons we have had good starts and then hit blips. The main reason for this is squad depth compared to the big teams, so giving out squad a month off actually could go against some of the big boys.

Not saying I am in favour of not of a winter break but definitely could help Saints. I love football at Christmas, but the two week schedule around that time is ridiculous for the level of athleticism in today's players.

There will be far more midweek games and I presume the season will start earlier in mid-July...and that will favour teams with bigger squads. However, quite possible that that will be us by 2021/22.

That exact thought struck me too, though I think those changes may already be in place by the time of 2022 anyway.

It's not the playing over Xmas which is the problem it's the squeezing in the fixtures at that time.
Boxing Day and New Year's Day should be enough, but they squeeze a game in at a weekend too.

    Less is more
