The ''measured approach'' should be undertaken. I've no problems with the signings Kenny and Damien Comolli made, its the prices that were paid for them. None of them have justified the prices paid for them or were ever going to justify them. Its entire English market for players that is inbalanced. Its not just Liverpool either that is suffering in that respect. How on earth can Jordan Rhodes justify a £10 million fee having played for Huddersfield? Or £12 million for a relatively average player like Steven Fletcher? I don't know if its just me, but they are taking a better approach than they did previously.
I agree, some crazy prices considering the levels we are talking about. Rhodes was playing in league 1 for the past few years and I believe the transfer fee was closer to 8mil, absolutely crazy prices. However the price I think reflected The fact Huddersfield are financially secure and didn't need to sell which meant they were able to hold out for the price they wanted, to be honest I think it makes anice change that the bigger club cannot neccassarily take advantage and take the other club for a ride. Having lived in Huddersfield I quite like the fact they did well with this deal! The prices at all levels are crazy though; my home team Halifax bought a player for 35k in 2009, sold him to Fleetwood for 150k in 2011 and he has now joined Leicester for close to 1mil having never played in the football league before, good player and is doing well by all accounts but crazy money for the level!
Good point. Lets take the Nuri Sahin loan signing as an example. They got burned on Aquilani and were a little unsure, so they decided to take him on loan. If he works out, Liverpool will be successful and look to keep him. If he doesn't, its a small loan fee. It also reduces the cost should he be successful they pay next year. Okay there is no ''first refusal option in place'' but sometimes familiarity comes into play and he may not want to go to another club.
I understand the arguments regarding Sturridge and Dempsey as made. However... I fail to believe they are the only two strikers (besides Andy Carroll) in the whole world upon whom we could bid. Surely they had a plan b for signing? I know for a fact there is a certain Derek Asamoah that could have been tempted to join us.
There is good news and there is bad news. The bad news is Liverpool could lose £15 million on the outlay for Andy Carroll getting just back £18 million next summer added to the £2 million WHU already paid. The good news is, and the sources seem to be very good on this, that Liverpool in January could sign a £30 million striker...for £5 million. Fernando Llorente only has 12 months on his contract left, and he can join any club outside Spain on a pre-contract agreement in January. Liverpool are reportedly going to tempt Athletic Bilbao with a £5 million offer to push through the deal, or they will persue Llorente themselves and tie him up on a pre-contract and Bilbao get nothing.
Sadly thats the reality for us these days! If he is going for anywhere between 5-15mil then you will have at least 10 clubs going for him, and unfortunately we will probably be at the lower end of his preferred choices.
You're forgetting something, one of his closest friends is the Liverpool keeper. He's already said and this has been reported that he would be happy to follow Pepe Reina to Anfield.
A lot of players would like to play in the Premier League, or would want to join a club they'll be guaranteed to start for, or with less pressure etc... We would have a small but not insignificant chance. Still think he'll go to Juve, however.
Pepe may help us get llorente but it isnt a certainty. Maradonna supposedly told Aguero he should come to Liverpool a couple of years ago. Maradonna supposedly an LFC fan since Istanbul. Unfortunately City has Aguero now. (For those that don't know... Maradonna is grandfather of Sergios child)
Mate the way Pepe looks at the moment he is more likely to be considering his own future at Liverpool. I respect your opinion but I think its highly biased; perhaps his friend is at Liverpool but so what? Alonso was his friend, so was Torres and they left to challenge for top honours, face it its a nice thought and nice soundbites from Llorente but I highly doubt he would reject the chance of more opportunities to win things, significantly higher wages and probably signing on fee, just cos his friend plays there! Surely he can still 'play' with his friend outside of work?
I remember Aguero begging in the media for Liverpool to make a bid for him. But I guess we couldn't afford or didn't want to spend £18m on a youngster. Fair enough I guess even if in hindsight it would've been a bargain.
