In 1982/83, Watford finished as top flight runners up, yet lost 15 of their 42 matches, the highest number of defeats ever suffered by a club finishing either first or second in any division of the Football League or the FA Premier League. Hull City and Rotherham United equalled this total, both of them in 2012/13.

For the only time in the club’s history goals were conceded by three different goalkeepers in the same game, which Reading won 6-1 on 14 September 1955. Ted Bennett suffered a broken finger in a vain attempt to prevent the home side’s second goal, Maurice Cook replaced him and conceded the third, and then Colin Bateman took over and was beaten three times.
