Fantasy stories have dire aminals, they are bigger and fiercer than normal. Dog size rats huge wolves 2m tall.

Is this some reference to the dire wolf, another word for a type of large prehistoric wolf which came into lots of early literature as having being ridden by demons etc. In which case I would say some sort of fantasy story which takes northern mythology as its source.
