Have just realised that I messed the question up. He was only a player for us - became a successful player/manager after leaving.
He played for us under Furphy, but was signed two months before Furphy.

he was the first manager to have taken charge of Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion....alll Brummie clubs?
He may have been, but something he did as a player is what I'm looking for.
