I'll give you that but we're actually approaching Perihelion which is the nearest we get to the sun - it occurs in the morning of 4th January. Come 4th July it will be Aphelion which is some 6,000,000 miles further away. However it is axial tilt that governs the seasons. The distances vary significantly from year to year due to the laws of gravity and mathematicians and cosmologists agree that by the year 6,000 or so it will take place around the spring equinox...is it farthest the sun is from the earth..... and the 4th july is the nearest?
